Strange cutaway...bottle jack?

Never seen something like this before. Doesn't seem like there's room for any hydraulics or ratcheting mechanism. Does anyone know something about these? Is it just a kind of primitive jackstand?

the back one is a jack stand. the front one is a cable crimper

Looks more like cable cutters. Note the mushrooming of the center shaft on all three of them.

You can see the slot for the cable cutting blade on the front one. They are expensive to buy new, but show up cheap at garage and estate sales.
