Hello all. I am having a problem with my hot tub I installed about 3 months ago. It is a 220 volt model. What this means is there in no neutral going from my gfci breaker to the tub.
Anyway, I'll start from the beginning. I have the main breaker panel in my house with 200 amp service. In there, is a 60 amp breaker(stablok, junk!!). From this breaker I had to run it to a small sub panel so I could run a heater for my garage. In the sub panel is another 60 amp breaker to a gfci breaker outside by the tub. Also in the sub panel is a 30 amp breaker to feed my heater in the garage. The main panel to sub panel is #6 3 wire, about 3ft long. Sub panel to gfci panel is same wire, about 15ft long. Gfci to tub is 2 wire, about 13ft long. Main to sub, then sub to gfci are both grounded and have the neutral. Not to the same bar either. From the gfci to the tub is no neutral as the tub manufacturer doesn't call for it.
So, I was using the tub for about 2 months, with no problems. Then as its getting colder, I needed heat in my garage, so I flipped on the heater. All was good for roughly 2 weeks. Next thing I know I go outside to get in the tub, and its off. The gfci had tripped. So I reset it, and away I went. It didn't trip off for another week. Ever since then, it's randomly tripping. Like maybe it trips in the middle of the night, then not for 2 days. Then it will go a week without tripping. I am having a hard time finding the problem because its so random.
Is it possible for the gfci to sense a fault before it? Like between the gfci panel back to the sub panel then on to the main?
Also, is there a relation to having my heater kick on or off causing a spike that the gfci sees and trips? Then why not all the time? It would be the easiest to just turn the heater off, but I need it on and I can't let my tub go too long with out it freezing.
Sorry the post is so long, but I really hope to get this cleared up before winter really sets in.
