Strange Vise

Has anyone ever seen a vise like this one? I was at a shop in Iowa, doing some training and they had about 4 vises just like this one. No brand names, no numbers, nothing. I couldn't quite figure it out. My best guess is that the Dynamic jaw can be removed and placed in the opposite side. I don't know why that is an advantage, but it is obviously pourpose built.

Anybody know for sure?

I have one at work. It is a more modern Wilton. It does not grip the work evenly enough for my taste and I find myself having to tighten it more than I think is necessary. I only say this because the vise across the shop my partner uses is a Wilton bullet vise and it is much better in this regard. I would have to say this is an Asian import. It just has that look and feel.

The flat surface up by the jaws is nice though for hammering on. It has yet to feel the effects of constant mauling by me.

That appears to be a Yost 865 6-1/2" Multi-Purpose Reversible Combination Vise. USA made and a very handy vise. I love mine got it for $220 with shipping from Northern Tool.

That is the shop that it was in, GSE. Camp Dodge, IA.
I don't really understand the teeth on the backside of the Static jaw.
Why are they common in a GSE shop?

Yup, looks like a modern Wilton 14500. Made overseas I believe. Didn't know they had other brands like this.

It's reversable, unscrew the removeable jaw & insert on the other side to get a larger opening.

I thought about getting one for a split second but it's looks very similar to the cheap Craftsman vise I have that has side to side play like crazy. It annoys the hell out of me. Those of you that have this vise, does the moveable jaw have a lot of side to side movement?

Mine is a USA made by Youst and has 0 play. The fit is very tight and the handle has a spring behind it for a nice feel. The whole thing is built with home shop verstilty in mind. I do believe they have a GSA contract. Regards
