I have a Lump-In-Law like that. Anytime he asks to borrow a tool I give him one from the junk pile because I know that it won't be returned. And I share a house with him !

The strangest place you'll ever find a tool is in the hands of my daughter's boyfriend.
He won't even pass you a wrench.

But no doubt full of pearls of wisdom whilst you're doing the job. That one thing about none engineers/mechanics that really bugs me...

Had a summer job 30 years ago helping flush a sprinkler system in a huge warehouse. Got near a wall where the hoist wouldn't work so I climbed a ladder to get to the last head. Turned to lay my wrench on the header of the wall, and there was a dust and bird **** covered old pipe wrench laying there. I figure somewhere around 80 years ago, some guy was saying "What happened to my pipe wrench?".

Got off the 4 lane after dropping off a load of cattle at the market one morning. I was in the middle lane of three and saw brake lights ahead of me and people changing lanes out of my lane. Finally saw a big drill with a two and a half foot long 1" auger bit in it. I couldn't change lanes with the trailer behind me, so I grabbed the drill and threw it in the bed. Called the local power company and asked if they'd lost it and then called the police and told them I had it in case anybody called them looking for it. No takers. Broke a handle, but it works fine. May use it to power a gate opener.

Found a socket for an oil pressure sending unit between the intake manifold and valve cover on a Chevy that I never had serviced by a mechanic. Kept it in the tool box for maybe 10 years when I had a sending unit go bad on a different vehicle. Danged if it didn't fit!

Stopped for a bathroom break on a canoe trip and looked off to the side and saw a Case pocket knife stuck in a log. No rust so it had probably just been left.

Was working on a 79 Blazer. You could hear a faint ticking noise coming from the valve train valley under the intake. We inspected the rockers and didn't see any issues that would warrant a cam issue so we pulled the intake off and in the lifter valley was a big flat head screwdriver laying across the lifters!

The guy sold the blazer cheap cause he suspected the engine was fixing to give due to the ticking noise.

Inside machines is pretty common, I found my current set of 430s in a washer. Find a lot of stuff up in the steel near the roof of the plant too. No one wanders by and picks up a forgotten screwdriver 60' up.

Found a ford wrench marked 1 and 2 inside a wall of a house we renovated. A screwdriver on the side of the road. A 3/8 extension in a parking lot. Found about 10 carpenters pencils in a car at the pick and pull

Had a Jeep come into the shop I worked at for a flat repair, had big 33 or 35 inch mud tires on it. I busted the tire off the rim and found a rat-tail file inside. Also have found a screwdriver and a socket on the road near my house while walking my dogs.

My friend had a 300D that drove pretty good, but on right turns if you went in too hot there would be a significant clunk from the left front.
Nothing the least bit loose though.
Eventually I got in there with a bright enough light and found a 6" crescent wrench in the bottom of the spring. It was wedged in pretty good, but if you transferred enough weight over there, one coil wold skip past it. Wrench was a little rusty but for the one shiny spot.

This reminded me of the tire shop repairing a flat, and finding a 9/16 combination wrench the customer ran over inside.

I found a brand new set of Snap-On extra long screwdrivers on the side of the road -- still shrinkwrapped. Must've fallen off a truck.

I'm doing this large bathroom right now that had his and hers vanities in the middle separated by walls, and had a soffit above it.

There's a flat pry bar in the attic insulation somewhere. Realized it was missing right after I rehung the drywall.

I found two heroin spoons in a rental once. The house was a newer renatal and in a very good neighborhood. One spoon was in the attic above the garage and the other was on top of a kitchen cabinet. Funny thing is, I lost a hammer in the attic while running some Romex. Damn attics!

LOL...And addicts. I swear I wasn't setting hat up.

Had a misbehaving Okidata dot matrix printer in a new engine analyzer. Opened it up and there was a screwdriver left inside from the factory in Japan.

7/8 westward combination wrench on a back road. Extensions in loading docks. And ridiculous stuff in lakes. Sunglasses, filleting knives, screwdrivers, umbrellas and a a fish gaff to name a few. The gaff still worked.

Claw hammer on the roof of my last house. It took me a bit to figure how it ended up there... fairly sure it was from the cable guy as he on the roof a couple months earlier installing a new line to the house. The hammer is still in my box.

When I was a teenager, found a rusty ball peen hammer head in a field behind our house. Cleaned it up and installed a new handle. 30 plus years later and that hammer is still in my box and gets used regularly.
