strap wrench recommendations

I am in need of a strap wrench. I need to remove a 6" bull gear from a couple of lathes. I used a wrench with a nylon ******** one and it worked, but it was old and I can't tell if the gear teeth chewed up the nylon. I borrowed this one and need to give it back, but I still have work to do.

The Rigid ones are about $23 for a 5" capacity and then they jump to $68 for a larger capacity. Not sure why there is such a huge price jump.

I'm not sure a rubber one won't get bitten into by the gear teeth.

Any one got any thoughts or comments on which type I should get?

I used the handle from a strap wrench and an old serpentine belt when I needed to spin large hydraulic filters. If you have an old serpentine around, might see if it will work with your handle.

For a really large ratchet strap something can be fabricated to use a ratchet strap and some steel. I think hisky sells ridgid knock offs at home depot. If the strap slips on the gear throw a piece of rubber inner tube under the strap and it will grab better

We use the larger Ridgid ones at work. They seem to be pretty decent at getting a bite on things.

The rubber inter tube is a good idea too!

We make them from ratchet straps that are no longer useful. Take some square tubbing and cut a slot lengthwise at the end.

So it looks like the Ridgid one is the way to go. I found on OTC one that works the same way and is priced better:

Made in USA, too! The rubber ones get bad reviews because they slip thru the handle and don't seem to have enough torque because of the way they work. The nylon one worked for me, I was just concerned the gear teeth were digging into it, but it seems ok. The teeth are not sharp; if they were I'd use the rubber trick mentioned above. Also, replacement straps are available.

I need one to wrap around the chuck on my lathe so I can remove it, or the big gear if the chuck is stuck. Both are 6" in diameter.

I appreciate all the ideas for a homemade or temporary one, but I need to use this more than once and for the foreseeable future.

I can't recall if it was here or a car group on FB but I have seen an old cogged timing belt as the strap for a strap wrench. Should work great on a gear.
