Someone may have covered this already, but I just discovered it. Streamlight flashlights, once only obtainable from the tool trucks is now at Walmart...at a fraction of the cost of buying from S.O., ******** or any of the other preditory tool trucks.
Since when? I've been buying them for the last 6 years online, and have seen them at outdoor stores and Batteries Plus in that same timeframe.:dunno:

Only available on tool trucks??? Whaaaaat???

I've bought several Streamlights over the years and never set foot on a tool truck. You might want to check out this really new cool thing called Amazon...or Bass Pro Shops...or Cabelas...or Google...

Having never stepped on a tool truck it has never occurred to me they would carry Streamlight products. However, I have bought many Streamlight items from a number of online vendors.

Tool Trucks?

I thought StreamLights were LEO only?

Damm....another one of our 'tools' hijacked....

This is by design. Oftentimes the potential for commercialization is a factor when the DoD or other agency provides funding for an item. It basically works like this:

Company: I have an idea for a robot that can enter a building with a camera on it.
DoD: Is there a commercial application?
Company: Yes, we can make it a vacuum cleaner
DoD: Cool....here's some money to make your concept work. Also, could you put a machine gun beside the camera?
Company: Sure thing

For many, many products (drones and iRobots come to mind), commercialization to a mass market didn't happen by accident.

Optics Planet has a Walmart portal. They handle Streamlights along with scopes and other firearm items.

Walmart is trying to compete with Amazon. They figure it's the only way they are going to survive in the long run.

Read the small print on the right side "Sold and Shipped by..." most are being sold by other vendors. As engineer2 mentioned, they are trying to compete with Amazon, and you need to check the sold and shipped by to make sure you are getting it from where you think you are getting it.

I think I am remembering this right. Isn't/wasn't OP a SO dealer? Not to say that makes you more right than someone else but I wonder how far back you are referring to? I have had my streamlights I think 5 years ago, they were commonly discussed here even further back than that being on sale at various websites.

Maybe we're talking certain models or a time that there was some exclusivity. But for the more common models like the Stinger, yeah those have been available from many places for many years.

There's nothing LEO only except for maybe a certain serial number range on department guns.

Stream light is kind of the bottom echelon of lights. Malkoff lights are far superior for LEO, military, mechanics, and home use. I know-- I own probably 20 Malkoffs. They have a lifetime no questions asked return policy. They are so tough you can drop them off the Empire State building and they would survive...and if they didn't, it would be replaced. The only thing Malkoff won't cover is frying a led with too much voltage.

These lights are 100% USA made by a father, son, and wife team. Exceptional people.

If someone wants a 15% discount on their first Malkoff please contact me at [email protected] or simply state that you were referred to Malkoff by John Pruner. I get no kickbacks from Malkoff. I am just very very happy with their products, service, and work ethic.

Cornwell

:see:

Back to the story, but first I want to thank everyone for the supportive comments. it's tough writing this, I usually fall into a depression after, but one of the reasons for this thread is to educate anyone who's thinking about owning a tool truck, this is the reason for the lengthy time gap. So, I had 10 days to return tools. The first 3 days were spent trying to design and set up some kind of invoice system I could use that included the info. Cornwell wanted. Talking to another dealer, I found that I could use a part of the MM1 program (The main dealer invoice program) that would do all the descriptions, quantities, etc. that I needed. Would have been nice to have been informed of this. I now had 7 days. I thought I might have gotten lucky after finding shrink wrap at the local Michaels hobby store, but unless it's done with a shrink wrap machine it just looks like **** and I knew would be returned. Another half day wasted. The next few days and nights are a blur. I kept it all in classes, sockets in one group, pliers in another, hammers in a group, etc. When I finished, there were a total of 12 cases of tools, costing roughly $640.00 to ship. I sent back about $500.00 more than the amount owed to cover anything that they would send back (hopefully). I didn't even think about shipping time and by now, really didn't give a ****, shipping out on day 10. I did call them to let them know it had been shipped. This began the nervous wait. Will they accept everything? Will they send it back for whatever reason? Will they even let me know? 2 weeks later I received a statement showing my account total as -$525.00. Cool a negative amount they should be sending a check soon. A week goes by, 2 weeks go by, now its a month and no check. A lot of companies won't issue checks for 30 days so I waited. 6 Weeks have gone by so I call finance dept. and explain that the statements they send every week show a negative balance, where's my check? Their reply, " Yes, we do owe you that amount, but in order to receive a check you must first request it" Your ******* kidding me right?, Ok, I'm requesting it!!!. "Sure Mr. H, I'll send it out, you should see it within a week" Cute huh? Those bastards were going to sit on it hoping I would either forget or give up on it.
Now when a dealer go's out of business, there is usually an incoming new dealer that the route and customers can be sold to. basically the next guy would pay me what my accounts owed me, leaving me to walk away. This time though there isn't a replacement driver (To this date, 7 months later there still is not a replacement) meaning if I want what my customer's owe me, I have to continue my weekly collections. I still have tools left too, but Cornwell has said once my contract has been closed, I can no longer 1. Drive my truck, 2. Wear my dealer shirts, 3. Use any business cards, letterheads, anything with the Cornwell name or logo or I will be sued. They even told me I couldn't park the truck in my driveway unless the Cornwell graphics were removed or covered. This meant having to put all the tools in my pickup and hitting the shops like that, which also meant loading and unloading every morning and evening. I still have $20,000 on the streets to collect, a truckload of tools to sell and 1 $3500.00 scanner to repo...if I can find the guy. So much for finding a job.

Next: Selling a tool truck, collecting and Carlsbad Police

Rest of the story....?

How did we go from flashlights to delinquent tool truck accounts? The story from softailgarage is the reason I could never go I to tool sales. I hope he gets that all sorted out.

My streamlight SuperStinger is at least 20 years old, I got it at a maintenance trade show... along with the belt leather, etc... Later that week I went to a safety supply house and here's the same set up, along with the shorter stinger, etc. Darn. Then I started seeing them more places.

They realized they had to go toe to toe with Maglight (which used to be the gold standard) and did so. Now they're everywhere (our crews used them for night and facility maintenance up until about 5 years ago, when the cheaper (and longer lived) LED ones started coming out.)...

Just like Mag Industries, they have a good product, people on the "outside" found out about them, and they realized they had a market outside of LE. But that's been years ago. Sorry.

What comes up in search results as being sold by Walmart online never ceases to amaze me when I surf around the net looking for things..

Although finding a Walmart selling AR-15's is unheard of in my little corner of the country, so I can only imagine what I'd find in store at some states I can't even think of..

Even though it isn't an accurate statement, seems many of you missed the word "once" in the OPs statement. He didn't say that they are currently only available from the tool trucks or even in the recent past.

As another poster stated, most retailers sell many more items on line, than stocked at the store.

It's the world of drop-ship.

I realize there are other/'better' lights out there.

My agency purchased Streamlight SL 20 lights for the entire group with wall chargers, etc. They held up pretty well, and if they stopped working, (I wrapped up one in several pieces) and shipped it back to Streamlight, a brand spanking new one showed up with in 5-7 days, no questions asked.

I had a first generation stylus, and the battery leaked, (my fault). I asked a Streamlight rep at a show at my local gun store if he had any ideas how to repair it. He said "mail it back" I said it was my fault, he said it didn't matter. I sent it back and it was replaced. That kind of service made me a believer.
