I've had my Stinger for about 4 years and was lucky enough to find another one on the street one day. They have since been reliable flashlights however as time progressed LED flashlights have caught my eye such as the Strion and the Stinger LED. TerraLux makes LED upgrade kits for Maglight and Streamlight. After a few months I finally decided to take the plunge and order a kit off eBay. The kit came in two different variations one at 220 lumens and one 300 (TLE-ST1-EX). I opted for the older 220 version as it was only $25 shipped compared to $43 for the 300 on Amazon. It was by far the best thing I have bought in a long time. The conversion is really simple and takes less than 5 minutes max.
The kit comes with the LED module with integrated heat sink as well as a replacement optic head.
After unscrewing the old lens assembly and removing the incandecent bulb you simply line up the arrow on the module with the charger arrow. Be careful not to push too hard on the module or you may bend the pins. In my case with a little wiggling it fell right in to place. At this point just screw on your new optic assembly and you are good to go.
It is honestly a night and day difference when I focused the standard head to as tight a beam as possible the maximum distance I could effectively illuminate was about 15-20 feet. After the conversion using the same battery only moments later I could clearly illuminate ~40-50 feet with a clean crisp white beam. Now I am running on the original battery and bulb so those may be contributing factors as to the effectiveness of my stock setup however after this upgrade it was easily 10 times better in my opinion.
I have read stories on other forums such as CandlePower of the conversion kits not being able to tolerate a drop however there were others that have claimed to dropped theirs many times from various heights and not one issue. The kit carries a 1 year warranty however I am not sure if damage from dropping it is covered. Hope this is of some help to others looking for an upgrade.
