Thanks Cam,
I slipped out to the shop today and welded the column seams.
Filled the place up with galv smoke, so I cleared out til tomorrow.

And Merry Christmas to you and yours

A few more applications of vinegar, salt and hydrogen peroxide and the color is coming along nicely
Looks like a good patina!

I use muriatic acid when I want rusty metal, but it also removes galvanizing--which I usually do before welding. Your mix seems much less noxious.

vinegar salt and HP will remove galvanized coatings. I've used it on projects where I had new galvanized buckets and wanted them to be old looking. It remove the coating, but probably not nearly as quick as muriatic acid though.

If the vise is to mount on the negative slope of the stand, yes, some ballast would be good. Also consider a pair of casters so it can roll--one of the most useful vise stand adaptations I've made.

I've made a number of stands with wheels but are not interested in wheels for this one.
Here is a couple pics of wheeled versions from the past

Burnt a hole in the top plate and added 100# +/- of punchings and partial rr spikes.
Then slopped a coat of linseed oil on the whole thing.
The oil brings out the patina nicely.
