I have an older 72" box made by the same OEM. it's pretty solid, better than anything you're going to find in a store but not quite on par with, say, a KRL.

read the description carefully, they offer two versions of that box, one with friction detents and the other with raise and release latches similar to Craftsman Griplatch. I don't think you'll like the detents. some of the drawers take 40lbs of force to open and the tools in the drawer go everywhere. they are impossible to open smoothly. my only other complaint is after 7 years the widest drawer is sagging enough to hit the drawer below it with 100+ pounds of sockets in it. in the end I'd say they are a decent technician quality box for the price.

While I agree that the Montezuma box is made by the same OEM as the box you and I both have, I don't recall the Montezuma boxes I've played with at Sears having the same detents (but it's been awhile since any Sears around me has carried a Montezuma box). I would still recommend the griplatch style however.

OP, there are many threads on here regarding Montezuma (and other boxes by what seems the same OEM under the Viper, Masterforce, and Extreme brands). They seem to be very well built import boxes, often regarded to be similar in quality to Snap On and other truck brands. I know the search here *****, but I'm sure you can find some info on this particular box!

I'd like to get my hands on a new Montezuma to see if the detents are as bad as my old one. when I first got the box I thought all the drawers were locked because I couldn't pull them open without 2 hands.

I don't know a single pro tech who uses a cheap box at work and is happy with it. Any cheap box.

they are the same price as getting a good deal on a KRA. not a cheap box. not a KRL either. as I said earlier, they are of acceptable quality for a technician.

I just bought one of the Tool Vault Elite 72" 17 Drawer Tool Cabinet TV-7217MZ-OR boxes a few weeks ago. It looks nice. It seems to be well put together. It' definitely got better build quality than a pretty much all of the Craftsman homeowner type stuff I've seen. It's been a while since I've seen a Matco or Snap-On box up close - so it's hard for me to do a build quality comparison. But I was very happy with the quality when i received it and uncrated it.

It did come with some replacement snubbers that are supposed to make the drawers easier to pull out - for the moment I've left in the ones that were installed. The drawers are maybe a little stiff - but not obnoxiously so (to me at least). I don't have the thing loaded down yet with tools either though.

The one I got is the "older" style (doesn't have the raise and release latches).

I have one. Had it for about a month now and love it. Even my Matco guy is buying one for himself. This is the box to get.

Is that marketing jargon for grip-latch?

I have no idea. When I ordered mine they had the "older" style with the detents. These are apparently the type of drawers that some people are complaining about. The drawers in my box are maybe a little stuff - but I'll have to see what they are like after I use it for a while. I have to say after using it for a couple of weeks - it doesn't seem like a problem to me.

The "newer" style - where you have to raise the grip to release the drawer - was more expensive. Maybe I'm old - but I'm just used to being able to reach down and grab the drawer and open it. Personally I think the boxes where you have to raise the grip to open it - are a pain in the ***. I just don't like them.

I suppose though that style of drawer release might come in useful if you've got a couple hundred pounds in a drawer and you've parked your box on the side of a hill. I just think they're inconvenient.

I will never buy another box that relies only on detents. Someone moved my box (needed to be locked first), hit a stone on the floor, drawers hopped the detent and rolled out tipping the box. Had to buy a new box, with latches.

Not worth the risk of box damage, damaging customer equipment or crushing children/pets/yourself.

You can and should lock your box when you move it FYI...

This is my next box. Been playing with a 72" in store here in Canada, and I love it. The build quality is 85 percent what snap on is in my opinion, and the price is substantially less. Get the grip latch set up. It's not hard to use like some guys say. You grab the latch and pull the drawer out. Guys make it out like you have to jump through hoops. It really is not hard.

Same thing happened to me! I just about broke some fingers pulling on them. At first I thought the lock was jacked up but realized a few opened easily. I just pulled harder on the rest. Once used they're not difficult at all. For all the complainers, the box comes WITH extra, lighter detents.

Awesome customer service. Can't say enough.

I have the montezuma 72" for 3 years now. No issues. Likely need a replacement swivel casted but it has the detents and I have no issues. I replaced a bunch of the drawers so I have many shallow drawers and I am really happy with them. Shannon is a nice guy and I would buy another.
