Hey guys,
I've been reading the threads about stripe painting and I have a question. A couple of years ago I redid most of my garage and painted the walls high gloss white. Now I'd like to add a color to the bottom half and then a stripe. I painted the bottom half gray and tried to do a red stripe. I taped and painted. It's really really hot here in Texas, so by the time I was pulling the tape off, the red was mostly dry. When I pulled the tape off, it pulled chunks of the red off with it. Shortly after that, I was able to practically peel the red stripe off the wall like it was plastic wrap.
After a frustrated trip inside and some more reading, I discovered that you need to sand and prime high gloss to get much to stick to it, which makes sense
. Lesson learned. In any case, now I'm contemplating how to do the stripe properly. The bottom half of the walls (where I painted red and gray) has now been sanded and I painted a new coat of gray, as well as fixed some white on the top half. Now I'm back to painting the stripe again.
Here's the dilemma. I'm still painting onto gloss. Now, admittedly, I'll be painting the stripe on to gloss that is only a few days old as opposed to multiple years old, so it might be more porous and therefore a bit stickier. Of course, it might not be. I don't know paint
. So, here are my questions:
1. Will the age of the paint make a difference? Or will I need to tape, and then scuff up the gloss paint within my tape lines? If so, how do you guys do that without tearing the tape off the wall?
2. For those of you who seal the tape by painting the wall color over the tape first, letting it dry, and then painting your stripe, do you have trouble with the tape pulling the stripe off of the wall? Have you used this technique on gloss, or only on something more matte?
Thanks in advance guys...
