So I have a 30 X 82 X12 pole barn. I want to sheetrock the first 36'. The rafters are on 36" centers which is too far for sheetrock to span so I have decided to strip the . I can get 1X3 stripping boards pretty cheap at the box stores but I cannot determine if this is enough to span this length. For the cost differene between 1X4 and 2X4's I have about decided to use 2X4's on their sides for the stripping but would like other thoughts.

If I go with the stripping (strapping) method, I would run them long ways down the length of the building. Which way would you run the drywall, and what centers would you put the 2X4's?

I used metal high hat furring channel, comes in 12 ft lengths but may be outside your price point.

It is used much in my latitude for strength and is impervious to high humidity.
