Stripping wire for scrap

^^ I know there are check cashing places in NoCal...

While I'm waiting for my turn, I watch what these other guys are bringing in, and for every pickup truck with jobsite scrap, there are 2 guys on foot or bikes with little bits and pieces of found (stolen) objects. They are getting a few bucks.

Paying with check would be a huge financial burden on the yard. My bank wants between 25c and 50c for every check you write. The banks HATE paper and do everything they can to discourage it's use. Write too many checks in a month, and you pay more too.

I know there are other banks and plans, but really, checks are expensive.

And it won't stop the theft, only the sale. Eventually, middle men (aggregators) will step in and buy the small amounts for cash and then take it to the yards. Happened in India, could happen here.

All the employees at the place I take mine wear shirts with "Is it stolen?" printed in big letters on the back....LOL! Here they get a copy of your DL, finger print, vehicle tag # and you get a check if its over 100$.

I dunno, I just told them to mail me a check I wasn't coming back to get a check. Cost me more in gas then it was worth at this point.

I put it in a pile and it gets taken in the way it is,not worth the time stripping the coating off and the price is the same.One yard in Muskegon,Mi is picky what they take,Padenal's is this scrap yard.Won't take bed springs saying it does damage to their machine,they want the plug ins cut off on the copper wiring.Even one auto salvage yard in my are had a lot of aluminum wheels stolen a few years ago and were easily traced.The owner painted them orange and the people that stole them were caught.Lot of the transmission cores go to core buyers and is more with the torque converter,these don't get scrapped.I don't even bother take apart alternators and starters,the guy that comes in to buy the catalytic converters pays $5.00 a piece for them complete not torn apart.

The yard I usually go to just looks at your drivers license, and gets your info (address, etc...) they pay cash for anything up to 200 dollars, after that they write you a check then and there.

$5 a piece for cats?!? Wow you're getting bent straight over sideways!

I was getting $75 for exhaust manifold with cats integrated and $125 for just cats. I'll buy them all day from you at $5 too.

The last time I went to the scrap yard with some wire they said I would of gotten $75 more if it was stripped. Guess I need to look into building something to strip the wire.

I walk in the door throw my stuff on a scale, a guy comes over and gives me cash and I leave. Simple as that. Not sure what the big deal is with the places you guys go to? LOL

$5.00 for the alternators (not torn apart), not the catalytic converters.

Yes,$5.00 for alternators and starters not torn apart.The catalytic converters,depends how much on them.$150.00 for the newer GM cats and the imports pay more.

Seems like you could get more than $5.00 for a starter if you split it open and took out the copper part and threw the cast housing into the cast pile.

Exact same procedure here in Michigan (minus the shirts).

The reman companies buy the alternator and starter cores complete from the buyers.Not worth time tearing them down just for the copper.
