Strong epoxy smell after 5 weeks! Please help!

We hired a contractor to put down our epoxy floor on Feb. 18th and 19th. It has now been exactly 5 weeks since his work completed. There is a horrible smell in the garage, that is also evident in the front of the house. I have to put on a mask to do the laundry, this is how bad the smell is! I have been in contact with the contractor who has said he did nothing wrong, and has been no help. I just found out he was not registered--when I confronted him, he blocked me and told me he has since moved back to CA (I am in AZ, he had moved his business here a few months ago). In other words, he has flown the coup. He told me he used a polyaspartic top coat--he wouldn't give me any other information on what he used. The floor is dry--someone told me there may be solvent entrapment or an improper mix of A and B.

We left the garage door open many days, although some days we had to keep it closed if we were out of the house (we live in a construction site where theft has occurred). I bought two fans today to try to **** the air out--it may be too early to tell. Something tells me this will not help. The garage door is open a crack over night--I will continue to ventilate.

I spoke to someone who said that removing the epoxy is the only way to go, albeit his last experience was so bad he refuses to do it again. He also mentioned that the concrete would absorb the epoxy and still continue to smell. Another contractor told me he could solve my problem by cleaning, sanding, abrating, then putting on another top coat to "seal" in the smell. I don't know what to do. I am smelling these odors every day, not knowing the effects it will have on me. I rarely go into the garage--now just to turn the fans on and off, etc. However, the smell is in our front entry way and in the laundry room.

I am going to contact other epoxy removal companies tomorrow (there doesn't seem to be many??) I am in PHX, Scottsdale area.

Please respond if you have any insight/experience at all--we are trying to start a family and I'm scared that these fumes will affect any chances we may have.
I feel as if I'm poisoning myself, I have never felt so trapped and scared.
Thank you all for reading and responding!

rather than remove the epoxy why not talk to the coating manufactuer maybe they will suggest a clear urethane top coat to seal it off

Trying to seal off a coating that is still off gassing from solvents is not recommended. What was the base color coat? Was it epoxy or something else? Many times it requires removing the entire coating when something like this happens. It's generally a result of not waiting long enough for the first coat to cure before applying the second coat.

Do you know *exactly* which product(s) were used?

My suggestion would be to call a company on Monday and ask one of them or one of their reputable flooring contractors to come out and inspect the floor for a better assessment.

Just continue to ventilate, the odor will dissipate eventually. Do you have some way to install an fan and let it run 24/7?

Hi
Agree you cant 'seal' in the outgassing. Normally this will dissipate over time, perhaps put in an axial fan with duct to the outside to keep a negative pressure in the garage while it cures. Other than that grinding it off and replacing it is the option. We do not believe the odor would soak into the floor and not be removable.
