I have this amazing welding table from Certiflat. Now I may be biased as the guy that makes them is my brother but it is awesome. For some reason there is a bunch of holes in it (probably to make it lighter :bounce:) and I wanted some clamps.

So then I looked online and said "hmmm I can wait". But I have been thinking about it and I think the holes are 16 mm or 5/8. I had some 5/8 laying around so I cut off some 3 inch pieces. Went to harbor freight and spent $2.99 a clamp.

Cut off the ends of the clamps, flap disced off the paint, booger welded on the rod.

Stopped to pet the boss of the house. Yes I know not to weld around pups.

Admired how brilliant I am and tested them. Works like a champ.

My wife came out and asked what I was doing.... I said saving like $20 a clamp. She said "wonder why your brother doesn't sell those" Then I looked at his site and he does. But I thought I would share anyways.... So hope this saves someone a buck.

you didn't want to cut a slot in the 5/8 round and then stick the cut offed clamp in the middle then weld them together..?

Nice table :)

Not a new idea, but still a good one. Has been on my list for some time now. I have been meaning to drill a grid of 5/8" holes in my weld table and make up some clamps. Been on the list for a long time. :)

cool idea, what keeps them from pulling out of the holes?

I mod crappy HF vice-grip's to make welding clamps like these, not shown is one using rod and half 1/4" pip to make perfect bead repair tool for the sheet metal on vespa scooters. I usually weld a 1/4" nut on the end and put a better bolt on for adjustment since the metric threaded stamping is one of the weakest parts...

Friction and the angle hold it. Saw a woodworker using something similar when was dropping just a bar I think a hole with an angle on the bar then tapping it to hold.

I assume this had been done. Most of my good ideas are “borrowed”

Dog is half wolf half malamute. Previous owner said he isn't friendly and won't listen. They named him Samuel L Jackson. Sam for short.

We have a husky too and they are now inseparable. He was house trained day 3. A week later he will sit, stand, shake etc. And at night I can't get him off the bed. He just wants to be petted and play 24 hours a day and is incredibly loving. Now he runs the house.

Rods are zinc plated.... Educate me

zinc gives off toxic fumes when welded. bad news...you can just wire wheel the zinc coating off and you should be fine...many threads on here about the dangers of welding zinc if you search...

Ah, yes, that I knew. I thought galvanized, but I assume same thing.

I like the idea on bolts... do you have to bolt down each time or will they hold with just the thread and friction? I am loving how easy they are to pop in and out as I move around on the table. I do think next ones I will center and weld as suggested and above.

Did the same for my table using some shoulder bolts. Gives a nice tight fit in the table and I got the bolts free.

The bolts will hold with friction. They hold better when fastened down. Depends what I'm working on. Doesn't take much more time or effort to thread on the nuts.

Another advantage of the bolt heads is that they have flat edges that can be used to align work on the table. Turns the clamps along two edges into a pretty effective way to align and hold work at a 90 degree angle.

Caveat: I have a small 2x3 table so reaching under to bolt on clamps is not a problem for me. It might be on a bigger table. YMMV

I hate to burst your bubble [especially when there is a thread about GJ Negativity ]

Welding Zinc does NOT give off toxic fumes , this myth has been around for years.
Welding Zinc converts it to Zinc Oxide, the same **** used in sunblock we paint on our skin.
Metal fume fever is when you haven't built up a tolerance for high doses of it.

Like drinking sea water , it can make you sick but it wont kill you.
There is no known effects of long term exposure

Metal fume fever, says it in your article as well...and no study for long-term effects doesn't mean it would or would not have happened. Don't have to kill you ..... to take cautions.

We are all adults, Nobody is forcing the OP at gunpoint to comply or nagging him to comply.

Have you been sick from Heavy Metal Fume Fever?!?! I can't believe you would say that it is no big deal. Eating dog **** won't kill you, plan on having that for dinner? This is one of those times where the steps to prevent an issue are so easy, why wouldn't you?

Wire wheel will not remove the zinc coating for welding, the coating is cooked into the steel. No matter how thorough your removal, you will still have zinc coming off the weld. Setup a fan blowing the fumes away from your breathing area towards an open door or window.

Muriatic acid removes Zinc fully. Getting the zinc off helps make the weld look nicer as well. I have troubles getting clean welds on galvanized.
