Strong Hold cabinets as base for work bench

Hello,

I have a couple of 42" tall Strong Hold cabinets and was thinking of using them as a base for a work bench with a 6 to 8 foot piece of butcher block spanning the two cabinets. Has anyone else done this? What are the pro's and con's?

I’ve used two drawer file cabinets at 32” height, and it does work OK for seated work. I’m guessing at 42” height you will only be working standing, so it won’t matter that you can’t draw a chair or stool up under the top where the cabinet is located.

Do bolt it down though; don’t assume it will stay put.

42" is high for some work but I like my bench grinders about there. Too high for things like a bench top drill press. Nice for small flat work and any kind of repairs to tools, clocks, a lot of things if you like standing which I do.

I've done something similar. Lista 900 series cabinets are 41 3/4 so basically the same. It makes for a high workbench but works good for me. I use it for detail work where I need items closer to my eyes. If I'm planing something I'll use a different lower bench.

I have a wall of 2 and 3 drawer file cabinets I set on top a of a framed 2x4 on edge sheathed pedestal with toe kick and a double tier type top for drawers (not completed) which will measure in the neighborhood of 38" high when finished. Theres 40" void of cabinets in the center for a place to sit and work. I may even go higher than the 38" because I'm tall. Standard countertop height is 36" but another 6 or 8" is not a deal killer for working heighth in my opinion. Adjustible height stool for sitting in between the cabinets if you so choose.
