I have started a thread about my workbench build. I want to mount my vice on the right hand corner of the bench so it can swivel from the front to the side of the bench. The bench is build with 2" box section 1/8'' thick and 1/8" plate one top, the vice is around 27 pounds. extension is shy of a foot.

So my question is, Do I need to brace (probably a 45*) that corner?

I will mostly do medium duty work, I would rather not lose the space and possibly had storage but I don t want to see the corner sagging over time.

I should had that the extension is welded and not continuous with the horizontal section left of the leg. I suppose it must make a difference????!!?!?

I can't imagine it would "sag", steel isn't the same as wood in that manner.

If you are going to be pounding something on the vice, I would definitely support it as it will have some springiness to it

I think that's a good decision. You never know when you might decide to put something heavy in the vise and then it all droops. Perhaps you could work some storage idea into the brace, like put a loop on it so that it holds a cord or hose.

I think I might have worked out something, thanks to the forum again. I Will incorporate a hitch receiver right at the corner inside the brace, and store the future hitched bench grinder and other hitched tool underneath this braced extention.

Thanks again for everybody s input, much appreciated. This forum is an endless mine of information and inspiration.

What about using receiver tubing ? Mount receiver tube to bench and make up a 2'' insert tube for vise. Now it can be removable.

Unless you REALLY lean on the vise you will be more than fine.
