Structural question

I’ve got a screen porch off the back of my house that I’m looking to repair/update due to water damage.

I’ve got an idea of how to address the issues with the posts and support, but wanted everyone else’s thoughts on the best way to address the internal ceiling.

My gut says I can move these joists (EX A) from the lower mounting (Ex B) onto this upper soffit area (Ex C) and mirror them closer to the roof rafters (Ex D)

Was planning on using all appropriate Simpson hangers/straps etc to accomplish this.

If I had to guess those boards are only there because someone intended to put up soffit. They do not appear to do anything for you structurally.

Those ceiling joists do nothing other than provide a place to attach a ceiling. They could be removed completely if you wanted.

That’s kind of the way I was leaning as well, but I was planning on retaining a ceiling. There used to be drywall long ago but a roof leak ruined it and we never put it back.

If you plan on insulating and reinstalling a ceiling, be sure you have some kind of venting between the insulation and roof decking. What issue are you trying to solve by raising one end of the joists?

No insulation as it is unconditioned space.

Problem now is head clearance. Bottom of those joists measures 7’ exactly, so I stand to gain 8” at the screen end, and 14” at the house side.
