Structural screws or joist hangers?

I dont handle reno work well. I'll start and try to work around what's there and end up tearing it all out. Costs more, but then it's all on me

That's how I ended up with all new plumbing, electric, half the windows etc.

Didn't want to rip this deck off. It it was smaller, sure.

Trying to fix this after the fact is triggering my OCD. Posts/footings are about 8' OC (I haven't measured this, I bet their inconsistent). There's no way to get consistent spacing, aligned with these footings, for the railing/porch posts due to the door position.

Well, the footings are a bit inconsistent...

I took some measurements last night in between rain showers and threw it into CAD. Looks like I can get everything laid evenly out to within 6", hopefully once you stand back it's not noticable. It will certainly be less noticable then a lower and upper post misaligned by 6". Only trick will be making them secure, certainly not how I would have framed this from scratch.

I did manage to pull some joists tighter and get the hangers on. I didn't want to pull too much as I can't see the other end on that part of the deck.

The really good news is other then the 2 cracked joists (I knew about already) there's no additional structural rot. In addition to replacing about 2' of decking boards I'm going to swap out one 8' joist at the end, it's been sun blasted and looks bad.

We have no idea what happened. Everyone is picturing different things in their minds because the question is very vague. Maybe a picture will help...this is where a picture is worth a thousand words. If something is pulling away, OP may have an imminent deck failure.

Not sure what's so hard to picture. There's a gap between the rim joist and the deck joists because no hangers were install to keep the intersection together.

The OP never said joist hangers and the ledger board are the same, among other things.

Hangers installed on the outside (rim) joist.

Wasn't going to crawl under the deck to do the inside, but ended up pulling all decking so now I have access.

Seems I found the root cause of the gaps:



Framed raw, straight from the mill.

I bet my replacement 8' 2x10 is too short to replace this.

I only needed 90"

But damn, I learned a long time ago don't trust a mill end or 96" off the bunk....

Looks the they pulled a tape, cut one end and slammed some nails in. Every crooked end/short side looks like it was pulling away.

On this case, cutting corners meant not cutting corners!
