It will say "structural 1" Don't trust the guy at the orange store who says CDX is fine, if structural plywood is spcified, it must say "structural 1".

Lynden's link explains that 1/2 cdx would be similar in strength to the 3/8 structural 1.

I went with exterior grade 1/2" fir plywood for shear on my ~18' walls.

1/2" OSB would been ok too, and saved some cost. I'm not an OSB fan.

Seems like he'll need 'structural 1' for a "PFH panel": https://up.codes/s/method-pfh-portal-frame-with-hold-downs

The tables the engineers work off assume common nails; hence the box nail exclusion.

Note NO galvanized nails. I'm looking into that. I just nailed 16 structural panels at my house using galv.-ring shank. My plans did not exclude galvanized nails. Before I nailed, I read a bit, on the inter-web. I was going to glue my panels but you should not do that. If I understood right (and I'm no pointy head) tighter structural panels can be worse in a basement. Seismic forces get transmitted to the supported structures as if they were bouncing off a drum head, and damage is increased; tighter is worse.
