Strut Sockets

Anyone know where I could get a socket set for doing struts for a decent price? I don't do struts that often, so don't want to pay Snap On prices.

I'm talking about the special sockets that allows the strut tube to be held while tightening the nut. Most of the struts I have done have a hex on the middle of the post, like a 7mm, but you can't turn the nut with a wrench so there isn't a way to use a socket and the allen wrench at the same time.

Offset box wrench usually works and I have also used an old socket held in place with a pair of vise-grips and then inserting the hex bit through the socket. Both methods are "shade tree" solutions. The strut sockets would allow the proper use of a torque wrench.

I just heat the nut and blast them off with an impact.

If you're stuck without air or a torch then I guess they are needed

Yeah Moose, do you have a part # on those? Or an actual name? I can't find anything on google or the tool books.

srmofo I'm talking about to install new. The old ones usually come off or if not I just put a vice grip on the shaft of the strut.

I'll have a look tomorrow. What size(s) do you need? (If it's for your Jetta it should be 21mm.)

I'm not sure if they even make them anymore, i bought mine through VW a couple years ago and they don't seem to appear in my 2010 Hazet catalogue. Seems they've been superceded by a somewhat more special set.

Get a set of Gearwrench pass through sockets/ratchet kit. Use it with a hex socket or allen wrench and your set. No need to get any fancy wrenches. I heard harbor freight has a pass through socket/ratchet kit for cheap but I have no experience with them.

OP: You're hotlinking the image in your post to my site (dvatp.com). Hotlinking is considered abuse by me and most other website administrators.

I do not use them,I take the nut off with an impact after compressing the spring on the strut compressor.Lot of times,it is cheaper to get a whole strut assembly already put together and most parts stores sell them. Some GM vehicles do have problems with strut plates and the springs, the complete strut assembly saves money here.Beats buying the strut plates, springs and struts seperatly which is more most of the time.

Many times I'm working with something that doesn't have stock springs... or even stock struts.

Really? You get upset for him using a picture of a tool? What harm was this doing to you? I've never seen anyone cry over someone using a picture to explain something, not like he was making any money off of it in anyway. Anyone can google and find you picture on the web. If anything it will bring more people to your site.

Quit crying over nothing.

It uses up bandwidth... some people call it "theft" - though I think that is a strong word... people do have the right to restrict usage of their own content, as best they can - though it seems just about everybody on earth is guilty of hotlinking from time to time.

You are talking to a guy that can barely figure out how to open up emails, so I have no idea what hot licking is or using up the bandwidth or any of that.

If whatever I did is wrong then sorry about that.

Just right click on the image and save it to your computer. Then attach it to your message. **** - no hot link. If you use the link to the image, the site owner has to pay for the bandwidth from their hosting service every time someone looks at this thread. It can get expensive over time depending on how popular the place where the hot-linked image(s) are used gets. Hosting software gives reports to help users identify this type of problem. Many sites (here included I thought?) discourage the practice because it results in threads with no pictures or different pictures than intended. It was a bit of a fad for a while to change the internal link of your page and replace the hotlinked image with a '******' pic. (warning **** AND what has been seen cannot be unseen!) A nicer version has already happened to your linked pic.
If you post a pic (or anything at all for that mater) on-line, somebody will use it for their own purposes unless you copyright it, protect it, watermark it, and throw lawyers at people. This will only slow things down a bit, so why bother. Just the way it is. Send folks a message asking them not to use it and how to use it without hotlinking if they must. Educate instead of offend.

All I did was get it off google. If you own google, well then my apologies.

Google is not a website it is a search engine. It finds other websites. I wish you had to take a test sometimes before using the internet.

I dont think its a big deal though, sounds kind of babyish to me to complain about someone using a picture, its not like they are claiming it as there own, and for god sakes its just a picture.

Those are mine. And sure, go for it.

Nate, spark plug sockets with an external hex and long socket drivers are good for this. 16/18/19/21/22mm ones are easy enough to get and cover a lot. I did this the other day.

Cute, so dw changed the pic on his website to prevent the hotlink. What if a potential customer actually wants to do business with you and wants to look at the pic of the tool?
FYI..... if you do not want people taking your images do not post them on the web.... or get a better web administrator.

That's the problem. While you may have obtained the URL from google, the URL points to my site and displays the image using my site's bandwidth. That is the very definition of hotlinking, and represents theft of my site's bandwidth.

If you doubt me, all you have to do is edit your first post and look for a URL that includes the text:

media/image/lisle_20400_shock_absorber_tool_small.jpg

You'll quickly note that the first part of that URL (which I have not posted here to prevent yet ANOTHER link to my site) does not contain "google", but in fact "dvatp.com".

And no, I don't own google, but I do own the content of my site. This was America last time I checked. I don't have a right to come to your garage and swipe a tool for my own purposes without asking, now do I? We have personal property and copyright laws in this country for a reason. Next time, try being less of a smartass and more of an upstanding netizen.

Hint: I would NEVER have known about this if you had obtained the image from my site and then uploaded it as an attachment. And while I don't officially allow that practice either, I'm not about to care as much if it doesn't cost me money to serve the image to everyone who reads this thread.

I'll ask you kindly one last time to remove the link. If you don't, I'll simply have the admins do it for you.

While all this may be true it was an innocent mistake by a guy that admitted he doesn't know much about computers. You are the first person I have ever heard cry about a picture and start calling names.

If it's that big of a deal to you why don't you then just do as you say and have the admins remove it and quit crying. Then figure out how to stop others from "stealing" you precious pictures and bandwidth. You said you would never come into a garage and steal tools. If you leave your garage open someone will steal your tools, figure out how to lock your garage.

dwvcfii, if you aren't already doing this, you should have your webserver look at the Referrer header and serve or not serve the image accordingly. I'd suggest serving an error code instead of an image since you're so bandwidth conscious. All 899 views of this thread must cost you tens of pennies if you're paying by the byte.

Putting up a terms of service page on your web site doesn't mean people will follow, it just means that you have something to point to if someone complains when you enforce it via technical means. Welcome to the wild west of the anonymous internet.

p.s. welcome to garage journal :)

You better get the consent in writing, in triplicate, get them notorized, and then store it in your safety deposit box at the bank.

Asking you to remove the link off of this website, which the author obviously frequents is assinine. Some people are too full of themselves.

This thread went downhill in a big way. As far as i'm concerned whoever owns the blocked image can go swivel and we can all get on with it, i've put up pictures of what the sockets look like now stop crying.

Here's another image that might be an option, though I found it via google, as well:

18.jpg

That does work, but in my experience few deep-crank wrenches like that will work, the Stahlwilles do have an edge as the beam doesn't "join" the side of the ring end, but many don't have such slim ends and won't fit in the deep reccesses of the top mounts.

As i mentioned before, spark plug sockets and long hex socket drivers work great for this purpose. In many other cases an impact works fine, but not always on rusty threads. :)
