hey guys this isn't exactly a garage Q but thought ide ask.. in my home basement the foundation is built using stones.. typical of this age home 1920's..
anyways i want to basically fill in all the randomness and smooth the wall out. i also have a cinder block wall that ide like to do so its all the same looking..

i seen that i can get stucco mix its a 50lb bag but only goes 7sq ft at 3/4" thick.. 13$ A bag.. so it would be quite a bit for what i want to do. i was thinking of buying the 80# quickcreet bag and just using that. maybe mix it thicker. what are your thoughts? or any better ideas that may work. i dont want to spend to much just want to smooth it out some to make it look better.. so i can paint it then.

A picture of your job would help. Sometimes it requires metal lath be attached to an uneven wall in order to keep the stucco from falling off during application and set-up. Stucco is usually applied in layers.

Stucco is usually applied with a base coat first and then you go back over it with a thin "color coat" - which is more expensive. It sounds like your looking at the color coat - Lowes carries the base coat for around $6 for an 80 lb bag

If you decide to use something from a home center or lumber yard, make sure its MORTAR, not concrete. Mortar is Portland cement, sand and lime. Concrete is Portland cement, sand and stone. Concrete won't have the "stick" and the stones won't let you work it in thin areas. The stuff you want will either be pre mixed with sand and be called mortar mix or will be available in bags called masonry cement which you mix with sand and water to make mortar.

I use Sakrete type S, it doubles as a stucco mix as well as mortar.
It spreads very nicely. About $5 for 60lbs.
