I recently started a thread about an Atlas/Craftsman woodworking lathe I picked up for a song and now it's in the process of being restored

The initial breakdown was easy but I've hit a snag in the step down gear housing. I've taken apart what would come off easy but I can't seem to get the mandrel/drive shaft free.

I can drive it about an inch to the right but the step down gears stop it from moving any further. I would hit it a bit harder but those gears aren't very strong and the set screw has already been removed.

If I hit the mandrel side to the left, it will bottom out on the collar I've marked with an "X".

Does that collar need to be pulled and then driven out or is there some other mystery I've missed. A parts diagram/expanded view would help greatly but I have yet to find one.

Thanks for you input;)

Hi bigcaddy- I suggest going over to the vintage machinery site owwm.org There will be a lot of info on your particular lathe and many members who have restored them.
