I had the fortune of purchasing a Shopsmith 10ER a couple of weekends ago for a steal and it is only missing a few odds and ends. Ultimately, I believe it would make a decent drill press and lathe, but my issue is that the quill isn't budging.
I have removed the quill return spring very carefully and it is intact. I sprayed some penetrating oil at the front, but I'm pretty sure it still isn't budging. I've read a few random posts saying that it's just going to take time. Any advice on getting the quill free or where it may be binding? The machine itself turns fine and smooth. Small 1/2 HP original motor on it and makes no weird noises and the bearings seem to be in great shape. I'm also missing the headrest, but it looks pretty easy to replace with wood.
There is no set screw groove on the top as far as I can tell. The locking clamp is free and does not appear to be stuck. The collar was easily removed. I have a lever handle coming on Friday but I don't think using it to try to release the quill is a great idea. I don't know if I'll be able to get the headstock bearing assembly out before the quill, but at this point, that may be my only hope.
