I need some help on a stud finder. I am looking at getting one for my dad for Christmas. His current one is getting pretty old and tired. He doesn't use one a lot but when he does, he expects it to work. I am trying to find one that is easy to use. He isn't a contractor but uses it more than the average homeowner. What is out there for under $50?

I've had a Franklin pro sensor for a few years and it works pretty good, but it is a bit slow, so you have to take your time. It's still way better than other stud finders I've used.

I got a newer Zircon last year, and it works amazingly well. I thought the 20 year old Zircon I had was good....The newer one is better. And, detects electrical in the wall also.

Costco has carried this same sensor (but in blue and with a different name on it, but it looks identical so I'm pretty sure it is made by the same company) for a few years now on and off at around $35 IIRC. I bought one and have been very happy with it.

I was shopping for one several years ago and narrowed it down to Bosch and Franklin. I went with the Bosch and regretted it ever since. Our house is metal studs so when mounting shelves, hangers, etc., it misses studs and when I use a scratch awl to verify the stud and nothing. The same goes for when I know there's a stud judging by the tape and joint compound plus some screws, it doesn't detect it. Go with the Franklin!

I have 4 stud finders. Two Zircons, one B&D and a new Franklin. The Franklin is the best.

+1 to the c.h.hanson magnetic one above. Works better than any electronic I have used on sheetrock.

I was at my local Costco tonight (Kirkland, WA) and they have the Blue-colored version of the Franklin (branded Precision Instruments IIRC) on sale for $29.99. They have even added a bubble level to the handle since I bought mine there.

I have a 15 year old zircon, my house has wood studs. It has never let me down... it does however eat 9 volt batteries when used a lot
