How do these work? I don't mean qualitatively, I mean mechanically, what do you do with this tool?

Ok, so does that splined/knurled disk rotate, or is it fixed? The splines grab the stud and twist rotate it?

Dumb questions, I know, I've just never seen one before.

Use two nuts torqued together. That thing isn't ten cents different from a pipe wrench.

Yes, the knurled disk can rotate, the pivot for it is not centred, but eccentric so the more torque you put on it, the harder it bites. The knurles grip the stud and allow it to be removed or installed. The stud passes through the hole.

Ok, I get it now, thanks.

But I guess if the same job can be done with two nuts, I should save my money and not buy this one!

If you can get to the stud they work fine but due to size won't always work. I would keep one around if you need them occasionally.

Just like anything else, if you shop used long enough sooner or later you will run into one you can get for just a few bucks like most everything else, then you will be obligated to buy it!

for exhuast studs on older vehicles those are great. there isn't normally enough room on newer vehicles to use it. for studs you plan on reusing the assenmacher type is much better.
