Stud Welder

Hey guys,

I am considering buying a good quality stud welder (pin welder) for autobody work. I only do the work as a hobbyist, but I appreciate good quality tools. As such, I am not interested in the harbor freight unit. I have used it, and it does a decent job, but I have used nicer ones I like better. That said, I don't want or need to spend thousands on this purchase.

I have been looking at the H&S and Motorguard ones in the $200-$400 range. Does anybody have an opinion on either of these units or some advice on something else I should be considering?

Let me know what the collective mindset is!

H&S is the staple of stud welders in my opinion. I've seen them dropped and abused for years and they don't quit. Glue pulling is all the rage now. You may want to look into finding a decent glue pulling kit as well.

I have an H&S. It's over 25 years old and still going strong. Has been used in a body shop on a regular basis. I'm the only user, so sometimes that makes a difference.

I have an old H&S kit. Well over 25 years old and still works great although I don't use it as much these days as I used to.

Although I have a stud welder now, it doesn’t seem like that long ago I was using electrical box knockouts for studs. I would weld a six penny nail on knockout, then solder it to area to be pulled. Never any burn through and very easy to remove/smooth.
Reusable and already tinned.

The ones Eastwood has/ or rather had were just rebranded ones. The one I bought from them, I have not had any issues.
