We purchased an old Studebaker dealership in town. Added a second level for the residence. and will keep the lower level for working on cars.

Here's a link to the newspaper story:

http://www.jsonline.com/news/wauk/nov02/93020.asp

Also: HGTV "ReZONED" will be filming the place this summer to be aired in fall.

Stay tuned.

Sorry... having trouble posting pics. says they are too big!

That is awesome! I like the way you think. :D

Near my home, there was an old "store" that was being renovated to become a muffler shop. Being a transplant to this town, I had no idea what the buildings history was. When the tore off the old facade, it had been a Pontiac/Rambler dealer! I love historical old buildings.

That is GREAT! I saw a program on HGTV or Discovery or the Home Improvement Network or one of those last year that showed four different couples that had renovated old auto-related spaces into living and/or working quarters. Get some pictures up. I'd love to see them.

There are a couple pics on the right of the main article...but it would only let me see one pic before wanting me to sign up! :dunno:

The one I did see looked cool, though. :D

Well done!!! very long low lines, almost Frank LLoyd Wright inspired, IE: Prarrie Style. It's always fun to see people with the vision to see beyond the shortcomings of an old building. If you get time, post more pictures of the inside.
Thanks for posting!!

I enjoyed looking at your new home, being a member of a planning commission it always is great to see someone take and old building and turn it into a great living place. That you help to improve your downtown setting is a joy to see.

More pictures?

Could someone provide a step by step lesson in "How to post pictures"?

OHEKK, To post pics you need to have your pictures stored at a site that has a specific address, URL, for each picture. I use www.photobucket.com for picture storage. It's free and once you get your pictures stored there, use their "Edit" feature to check size. You can resize your pictures to make them small enuff to load to the forum i.e. if your size is 800 X 600, reduce it by 50% to 400 X 300 which is max you probably want to use for Forum posting because of down loading times for those with "dial up" internet speeds. The 1st line under your Photobucket pictures is the URL (address) for that picture. You "Copy" that line and "Paste" it either into the text or your postings on Forum or upload your pictures for your signature, etc. To imbed pictures in your message text, click the "Go Advanced" message reply feature and then place the curser where you want to place the picture. Next, click on the Icon that's a little yellow picture of a mountain from the line above the shaded box where you type your text. A "Script Prompt Enter the text you want formatted" window will pop up. That's where you Paste the URL in the space provided and click on the "OK" button. Then you preview your reply before clicking submit to make sure the picture is as you wanted. Using these tools you can imbed pictures in text of your postings, as with the picture inside my shop, or add a picture to your signature every time it appears, as with the snow picture by my name below, and/or add an "Avatar" under your personal info to the left of postings area as shown with the small pic of the car and "Beast 2" avatar. It is best you use the "TEST FORUM" section listed on Garage Junkie web site's home page to experiment with posting your pictures. There are also some good help sources in the postings under the "Help and Suggestions" section of this site. There are many great features provided with this site!!! Good luck, hope this helps get you started

Please keep us informed as to when the HGTV thing will be on. I don't get it but my parents do so I'll have them tape it for me.

Finally!

I'm making progress in the "shop"!

I got the lift installed and working last night...a 2 poster VBM / Challenger and it works GREAT! In fact I used it this morning to put brakes in the wife's car.

The "Men's" room, complete with a urinal, and "Ladies" room are done.

What was formerly the "parts room" is now a hang out for the guys with a 100 year old bar.

Work benches are next, then some lighting. I had hoped this would've been done this past winter but I've learned to be patient.

I hope to spend more time going to shows & cruise nights this summer so some of the shop work will have to wait til next winter.

HGTV was supposed to come in July / Aug to film the project. Still lots to do!

Hi, Any updates on this project?

This is my first post and I've been browsing the archives. This thread jumped out at me. I love this idea. I saw that show on the Discovery Channel/HGTV too with people changing garages into living space (the fire station jumps to mind). If you're still around I'm sure lots of people would be interested in more pictures and the broadcast of your show.

Thanks!

Update

Yes the HGTV photo shoot was done back in July.

It was a full day, 10 people, 3 cameras rolling and never a dull moment.

The program is called "ReZoned" with Tony Frassrand as host. One camera spent most of the day with my wife filming the residence above my shop. The second camera was with me in the shop, showroom and with my cars. The 3rd camera was off shooting everything else that didn't move! They have over 20 hours of video and another 3 hours of "Before" and During" construction footage that we provided them as well as some vintage photos from the 40's when it was a thriving Studebaker dealership. I'm not sure how it's gonna get edited down for their program.

We were told that "Rezoned" will start airing in October and they expect ours might be the 8th episode making it near the end of November.

I'll let ya'all know when we hear the dates.

Stay tuned!

PS No... no ice fishing for me! Though Waukesha is kind've a quaint litlle town just west of Milwaukee. Lot's of neat things happening here.

Thanks for the update!

"ReZoned" sounds like it's all about commercial properties that have been converted to residential. The ultimate home makeover!

No not really... it's about projects that convert one type of use to another.
It could be where a firehouse is converted into a restaurant or a home or old movie theater into an art gallery. There are many of these conversions/renovations occuring with in blocks of where I live. In fact, When HGTV was in town, they shot another project that our friends had recently completed. An old blcksmith shop that they converted into an office downstairs and a residence upstairs... should be aired about the same time as ours.

As my generation reaches retirement age and the so called "Nest " is empty, we are discovering the conveniences of urban living. Like us, many of our friends are downsizing by buying condos or moving into loft apartments in the city. High maintenence, high taxes and now gas prices are reasons to move from the country and into town where everything is within walking distance. We're lov'n it!

No Luck!--- Hard work!

Not lucky! we've neither inherited a fortune or won the lottery. Everything has been a result of our hard work. Been married to my high school sweetheart for 35 years and even that takes hard work. We spent about 3 years looking for the right building. This one took over a year to close the deal.

Not lucky but I am grateful!

Keep your eye open because there are a lot of places that have similar potential.

I am fortunate that my wife has both the vision and patience of what this place could be.

HGTV reZONED

We watched the premier episode of HGTV reZONED with Tony Frassrand last night

Sunday 8:30 CDT.

They featured an old train station, Church, bank and a ferry that was converted into living spaces.

It was a pretty neat program and I like how it was produced.

It will be interesting to see how our project shows.

Tentative air date is Sunday November 20

Stay tuned

We were informed that ReZONED is being "pre-empted" for Holiday programming during December.

Our project ( episode#108) is scheduled to be aired on Sunday Dec 25.

Rezoned is now a part of my TIVO addiction. what a great show. I'll make sure and see this episode. The vision of some people is just amazing.

Did you see the one family that converted a dam and powerstation?!? wow.

Dan presently lives out in Arizona, He stopped by this summer to see what we had done to this place.

He is an encylopedia of knowledge on old cars and has many fond memories of the old days.

I am much appreciative of the old pictures and historical information he was able to provide.

The wife and I just love HGTV. We watch it all the time and we did see the one on the damn. Neat. You and your wife have a wonderful vision. If I understood you, your place will be aired on Christmas Day? Sunday the 25th of December? Look forward to seeing it.

No...No damage to our place and fortunately we were slightly upwind from it.

The whole area was engulfed in smoke so some places are gonna smell for a while.
