Be sure to get a big grinder that is not manual. You want hydraulic drive, sweep, and vertical. Nothing with handles that resembles a rototiller.

If you have the room , get a small excavator , a lot cheaper than 2k.
man that was quick, from asking about grinding to having them done in one day. I had a willow about 4' in diameter ground out. Well, what was left of it after I started burning it out. Once he started grinding it, it fanned the coals and started to burn again. 40 bucks well spent.
I'll be gringing a 4X5 ft stump on the 30th. Plan on renting a Vermeer 252 hydraulic for $200 for the day. Self propelled, with hyd sweep, etc. Comes on a trailer. Anyone familiar with this tool?
Yup, that's the one I used. It worked like a dream! I'll be renting it again this fall to take out some more stumps.
I have a bunch of stumps that need to come out. Can't wait to rent a grinder and just slaughter them to bits! It's 250 for the day here for one of the self propelled ones on a trailer. I should get a couple neighbors in on it and split the cost per stump.....
I had a neighbor get rid of a huge stump by boring a hole in the top and on in the side down low, and just had a smoldering fire on it. I don't know if the lower hole helped a lot with air or what but it was gone in a day or so, never really got burning high, just a slow smoldering fire.
Needless to say I thought it was clever.
Any idea how long a 4x5 ft stump (say a foot high) will take to grind? Can it be done in a half day?
I don't think it would take long at all. The stumps I was grinding were pine but were probably 1 ft in diameter. I took them down as low as I could get them which was probably about a foot and a half below grade. They were only taking me about 15 minutes each. I bet it wouldn't take more than an hour depending on what kind of wood it is.
I forgot to add, if you have a chainsaw you might want to try and cut it as low as you can get it. It will save you ALOT of time to not have to grind through that extra foot.
