My friend stopped by with his Case 580 backhoe and removed the stump, took less than 30 minutes. Very nice when you can drive the equipment to the job site.

Lucky guy, I just finished off burning 12 stumps, a lot of work. Wish I had cheap access to a large backhoe. Way to go.

I have one that is about four feet high and 30 inches in diameter. We couldn't cut it to the ground because it had chain link fence that had grown into it. I need something just like that backhoe to dig it out!

That's the way to do it, I had a friend drive his 590 over and I pulled 20+ with that. Makes quick work of it.

I couldn't imagine the time it would take to burn them out.

Somebody on here years ago reported buying a bag or bags of charcoal and put that on the stump to burn it. The charcoal would produce higher hear than piling other wood around the stump.

We've got several full size backhoes at our shop. 4-5 years ago I had one of them at my house for a month or so while doing some stuff. Can't remember if it was a 580 Case or a 575 Ford. Anyway, I'm driving down our street one Saturday morning and see a friend out digging around a fair size stump with a mattock. He's in the grading business and has a medium size JD excavator, a dozer, a tandem dump and a trailer, but all his stuff is on a jobsite about 25 miles away.

I stopped and told him he was welcome to borrow the backhoe. We ride back up to my house and he heads off with the hoe. Mid afternoon he comes driving it back up the street. Stump deposited in the woods behind his house. Dug himself some fill for the hole while he was back there, and had it packed and ready for grass.

While he was working, not one but 2 different people stopped and told him they lived nearby and wanted him to come to their place and dig up a stump. Once he told them he was renting the machine for $100/hr and it'd take at least a couple hours if the stump was about the size of the one he was working on, they were no longer interested. One even told him he thought $40 would be a fair price "since he already had the machine there and his house was close by". And, who'd have imagined, Mr $40 was driving a near new Escalade. Then Sam and I had a conversation about cheap *** people who'll pay $80K for a pimped out Chevy but expect strangers to work for them for nothing.

That stump might require a few weeks of steady fire to burn up. I had a 24" diameter 24" high oak stump in my yard, that was mostly hollow. Thought I could easily burn it up, but that took a lot longer than I thought it would. While burning though I put a grid from the grill across the top hole in the stump and got some steaks. It was perfect to sear and slow cook those steaks over a oaky steady fire, those were some great steaks.

I tried that on a black oak tree back in TN, didn’t work out good at all. Then did the ole drill holes and then pour you favorite fluid. That didn’t work. Ended up drill a series of holes in a line, then used a sawzaw blade and a SHARP long handled ax and split the roots lengthwise. It was estimated the ole oak was over 150 yrs old.
Glad that’s over as it took months to complete….

Burning stumps....
With all the stumps I had, they where sitting in the ground about 3-4 years years, they were all still solid wood. I dug down about 18" around the stumps and used between 10 and 20 cubic foot of firewood ($20-$40) per stump. Biggest issue was the water which remained in the heart wood of the stump; all the water in the heart wood took a lot of the fuel. It took 1-2 days of burning per stump, 2 days for the OP's stump size. If you do not dig down at least 18", it would take forever to burn stumps. Best to dig down, wait a month or two, then burn them.
Tried drilling and Potassium nitrate, diesel and burning without digging, both were useless. Thought of blasting with ammonium nitrate but neighbors are too close. Overall not bad, sure beat $300 per stump to have them ground up.

I'm all for burning them out, but at about 7500 meters per second. Much slower than that is too much work.
