Stupid garage heater question

Looking into getting a natural gas vented heater. When you vent the pipe out the top how do you keep rain and animals out of the pipe?

With a cap and rain collar.

Is the pipe usually metal or pvc? I was thinking it would be a pvc pipe so I was confused. If it is pvc do they make a cap and rain collar for pvc?

Depends on what type of heater you're using and the efficiency.

Anything under a 90% efficient unit is going to have a metal pipe.
