Stupid movers!

I moved yesterday. The movers took my Snap on KRA2007 and KRA4059 on the truck with them. They got to the new place, put the box on the lift gate and let it tip off the gate halfway down! No pictures yet as I am on a crappy borrowed wifi connection but I'll post them when Comcast gets me hooked up soon.

The top box is pretty well screwed, the drop down door wont close and the front left frame piece is cracked all the way top and bottom.

The bottom box is beat up on the left side but not as badly looking as the top. I got a claim form from the movers and I did pay for the supplemental insurance. I'm going to be enlisting my ex's help in filing the claim, she has spent 25 years as a senior claims rep (she was in charge of the McDonalds hot coffee spill case subrogation and also was closely involved with the Fed Gun liability suit on the insurers side defending themselves)

Speaking from VERY personal experience, I almost feel a tiny bit sorry with whoever has to deal with her

All the tools seem ok but they are a soup in the drawers. I'm going to claim both boxes full amount, has anyone dealt with a similar situation? Any advice or anecdotes would be cathartic.

Endured several bad moves over 24 years in the military. I was just looking at my hardware drawers last night and was reminded how the movers packed all 4 fully loaded drawers in a dishpack box with alot of other heavy equipment. The box was exceptionally heavy and the loaders dropped it, denting the cabinet. Nothing compared to the damage your box suffered but still pissed me off. I packed most of my tools and workshop equipment after that.

Well, they're not used to heavy stuff like that I suppose. Normal stuff are boxes, dressers, beds, couches, etc. Now you have a wheeled tool box full of tools, it's going to throw them off.

If they have good insurance you should be covered...but just in case
Take photos of the damage and keep a file with any pertinent info.

And pay them by check, personal check that you'll be able to get a copy of, reason for this is you'll then have their bank account info and this will allow you to collect on a judgement in the event you need to take them to court. A bank attatchment is the easiest way to collect a judgement.

After a 50 mile household move, my floor jack wouldn't work.
They kept rejecting the claim, saying that delicate electronic equipment wasn't covered!

After taking it apart & checking the fluid, it worked again (& has for 32 years).
They must have hauled it upside down & induced an air bubble.

My grandpa moved last weekend, the movers broke (and replaced) a piece of molding around the bathroom door in their attempt to move a couch out of the den.
Luckily the apartment management understood after 21 years of living there.
When the manager did a walk-through with my dad, he said 'I guess the building shifted' and left it at that. LOL

I hope you didn't have the typical insurance that moving companies offer... That type only pays by the pound for damaged goods.

The supplemental I bought is good for up to 10K IIRC.

Better check the policy closely. Some movers exclude liability for anything weighing >500 lbs.

In the future, I hope you pack your own tools, even if you have to rent a flatbed trailer at Uhaul and do it completely yourself. If ***** that this happened, and I do wish you the best in your claim. Personally I do not let anyone I do not trust with my life in their hands within 10 feet of my tools! Learned that over 20 yrs ago and it still works for me today.

Ugh. I cringe just thinking about this, cannot imagine how anyone would keep their composure and not go completely bananas, especially with something as nice as a SO box. Sorry for what happened, hope you take them for everything they owe you and then some for the aggravation.

Please post the name of the moving company and how they are to deal with.

I suspect what happened was this; a lot of times lift-gates don't operate all that smoothly. and just a little jerkiness and that tool chest could easily roll off and, unfortunately, the safest thing to do in that situation is just stand back and watch it go,

Also it sounds like it wasn't an actual moving van, because moving vans have a relatively low rise (less than 24", as compared to your standard shipping trailer that has a 48" high deck) and most things are loaded with ramps whenever possible.

as somebody who was in the moving industry for over 10 years i know a few things lol. one if its property damage they cover it 100%. for damage like the box it depends on what valuation you have. 99% of the moving companys. you dont really need any expert just read what it says. what one did you pay for?

Update: I just heard from the insurance company. Since I purchased replacement coverage up to 10K I should be set. They assigned a claims adjuster and another company that does repairs is setting up a time to photograph the boxes and make a decision.

I explained to them that even if the box is repaired, it will have lost it's warranty. I'm not willing to have a box without a warranty, the lifetime guarantee is a big reason I chose the box! Fingers crossed that they will take care of this.

It sounds like you are 'fighting the good fight'. Good luck! You might want to have the phone number to the Illinois State Insurance Commissioner handy; I've heard the Ins. Co.s dread a consumer filing a claim through the state office.

We moved last year. Long distance, New Hampshire to Florida and our stuff was in storage for about 6 weeks. Long story short we had the extra coverage and a lot of stuff got damaged. We watched them load and they were very careful.

Storage was another matter. We think thats where the damage happened. Mover was North American Van Lines. They repaired or replaced everything except an old (1983) Kennedy rollaway that they scratched. But... it had some scratches before. I was able to prove that they scratched it because all they wrote on the manifest was Kennedy rolling tool box good condition. They gave me $200 for that. I downloaded the drawers and put the tools in boxes to lighten the load while in transit.

They damaged the headsets on 2 very high end Trek bicycles and told me to go to the bike shop of my choosing, have them repaired or replaced and send them an invoice, they paid 100% of those repairs. These are old USA made Treks and replacements would have been China made so we opted for the repair. It was a pain in the rear that took a few months to sort out but in the end we are pleased.

The independent claims inspector just left. He agreed that the box cannot be fixed correctly so that's what he will report to the claims adjuster. He said he guesses that I will be offered full replacement check or 1/2 and I keep the box.

I'm going to offer them 300 bucks for the boxes. That's twice the scrap metal price.

Good Luck, just to reiterate if the ins. company starts dragging its feet, let them know you'll be filing a claim with the States Office of insurance. They tend to get very exited by that.

Don't fret over getting your old wrecked box back... offer the $ and see what happens. Keep in mind that the important thing is you get new boxes. If it is like auto insurance, you may have first right of refusal to the "salvage" if you want.... tread carefully, but it seems that you will get taken care of.

The more I look the more i think I'll just take the money and run. There's a KRA4107/4113 and KRA3000 side box that has been on CL for over 8 weeks listed at 1200. I might just show up with a pickup and 8 hunnert dollar bills and see what happens.
