Hello everyone. I'm heading over to HF to get a 4ft, 10,000 lumen LED light to hang over my 4x8 workbench. Wondering if getting two of them would be total overkill? I'll also have to figure out how far to hang it from the table to avoid shadows. Annnnd the process begins. Appreciate it.

lights on opposing sides would help with shadows, me thinks.

Watch the light color, some of the LEDs are so far into the blue/white spectrum they create horrible reflections and are stressful to work under. Also try to see if they say anything about creating electrical interference, some will kill radio reception and effect other devices. I would probably go with two less output ones as opposed to one really bright one that would cause shadows and reflections.

I like a lot of light over the workbench. But it should be even lighting. When the lights are very bright and you look up and find it blinding…..not good. If you have to avert your gaze downward you may have gone too far.

The Harbor Freight lights are so cheap you may as well buy two of them. If it ends up being too bright over the workbench, use the second one somewhere else around the house.

Where can you actually buy a good quality light without: a) traveling, b) paying shipping, c) gambling that it is really better?
I found a lot on Amazon. If I remember right they were $108 for a box of eight 8 footers. They came with everything including jumpers to string them together. I couldn't believe the difference!!! Now I want eight or sixteen more. 😂

Two, end to end, imho.

Build outriggers off the wall, or table; or drop them from the rafters on chain.

It's fun to say things like "you can never have too much....(fill in the blank...***, pizza, light...).
The truth is that too much light is very dangerous. If you're gonna spend alot of time at that workbench doing close-up work, then you can end up with eye strain, migrain headaches, and many other health issues.
To answer the OP's question properly, you'd need to know the height at which the lights are hung over the bench. Assuming a normal garage situation where those lights are 6 to 8' over the bench, 10,000 lumens is probably overkill and TWO of them would likely be pretty ridiculous. Most normal task lights are in the range of 4000 lumens.
Good luck,
CD

Just installed a 5k 4000 lumen Edison base bulb 4 ft. over my vice for welding illumination. Can’t imagine what 10,000 would be like.
