Read online this will be safe to use on the painted metal tank on my motorcycle to secure one of the tank grips that has lost its stickiness..

The grips were self stick type, and one came off last summer from the heat and won't stay on anymore. It was suggested I just re-attach it using elemers rubber cement, and that would be safe, meaning removable (if so desired) without harming the paint underneath thats on the metal fuel tank. Instead of buying another set of grips for $50, im wanting to know if anyone actually knows for sure if this is the case. Figured for the $8 of glue it might be worth it, esp if it keeps the grips from shifting around when my knees are pressed against them holding on for dear life..

Bought the glue, it's Elmer's no wrinkle rubber cement No. 231 I think. Says acid free, photo safe. So what's the thought? Am I good with this?? If nothing else it smells good.. :)

Not my bike, but basically this is what I'm wanting to "restick" in a safe, semi permanent, removable without paint damage way...

I FULLY admit I might be over cautious, and over thinking asking about this - but I'd rather look dumb asking than look dumber with a fucked up paint job if I take them off..

I used clear RTV to put the tank pads on my wife's Triumph. They gave been on there 3 years now with no issues. Haven't tried to pull them off though.

My own thought was to use silicone adhesive, but this is what was suggested instead.. the main thing is I need to be able to apply an even thin coat..

Use 3m emblem cement. Made to hold automotive emblems on to painted surfaces.
