Stupid Welding Question

Guy is selling a Millermatic 200 which he says comes with 20ft leads. What does that mean "20 ft leads?" I've never owned a welder and looking to buy one to start. He says "excellent condition." What is a "steal" price for something like this? I've been looking at a brand new Millermatic 180 for about $800-$900, but have heard alot of good things about these 20-year-old welders.

20' of Welding Cable, Meaning you can Weld up to 20' away from the machine.

that means(normally) it has a 20ft mig gun. it can be good or bad. you can reach more spots, longer distance with longer guns while keeping the welder/gas tank stationary. but at the same time it runs into more tangles and easier to jam.

IMHO, 12 foot is the best for me.

$650 isn't out of line if the machine is in nice shape. We have one of these at work, nice machines.Weld quality is really good.Very versatile.I'd take one of these over a Millermat 180 anyday if it was taken care of.

I paid $600 for my new MM 180 about 6 years ago at a local place that was having a super blowout sale. Nice machines, HTH, Paul.

Thanks, guys. That helps. I wasn't sure if "lead" meant the gun, or the work clamp, or both. Or even if it referred to the power cord.

Yeah, it's a ***** to weld with a 9mm. No matter how you angle it or set the gas, you keep blowing holes through the joint, and contaminating the base metal. The Miller would work much better.

The 9 mil makes a better welder than the 50 cal makes a hammer...

I really doubt it has a 20 ft gun on it, maybe 15.

Nope..definitely a 20 ft gun. I bought the whole setup today for $500! His 20 ft gun is a result of the size of his home workshop, which is freaking amazing! The guy is 70 years old and is simply not using this anymore. In great shape, plus he threw in about 50 tips and three spools of wire (one aluminum and two steel), plus two pairs of new gloves and a container full of brass sprinkler heads (don't ask me why..he just thought I might be able to use 'em. I have a feeling I did pretty well on this one.

Alright..I've got a follow-up question. When I built my garage, I didn't plan for this significant a welder, so my dedicated welder outlet is 208V on a 30 amp breaker and the wire to that outlet is 10 AWG (As I recall, I used specs for a Millermatic 212 when I built). Now..the Millermatic 200 runs on 200V or 230V, which is fine, but the manual recommends an input conductor size of 8 AWG and a 60 amp breaker. I'm not going to be doing any heavy-duty welding, so I'm wondering if I'll be okay by simply swapping my 30A breaker for a 60A, or do I need to run a new wire?

Don't swap breakers, just use the 30A. The breaker protects the wire and if you pull too many amps it can save you from a fire.
Good Luck!
