Sub-Panel Backboard

Hi:

I need to install a 12 space 60A sub-panel in my garage on a fairly narrow strip of wall (~2' w x 8' ht). The wall is CMU. I'll have a 18"x3"x3" gutter at the top near the ceiling, sub panel, and possibly some sub-meters below.

I like the plywood backboard for everything to mount to but I'm wondering if it's better (or worst/over-kill) to use unistrut channels to mount to the CMU first then the plywood backboard to the channel? Input please.

I've always just done it with a couple 2x4's to space it off, just use PT. Strut would do the same thing, I just think a 2x4 is easier to mount to the wall and easier to mount the plywood to

Plywood. Strut has it's places and can be a life saver, but mounting a panel to a wall isn't one of them.

I prefer strut, especially when mounting to concrete / block... but I'm also not the one paying for materials in the installations I do. Based on the fact that you stated you are installing sub meters, is this installation outside or in an electrical room?

If the mounting location is outside, I would suggest going with strut for prolonged moisture resistance as opposed to plywood as its likely going to both get wet and also be baked by the sun and galvanized and painted metal parts are going to last longer than wood.

Just my two cents.

I appreciate all the feedback. I went with PT 1x3's and cabinet grade ply over it.

Btw, it's in a carport so it's well protected from sun and rain.
