Sub panel feeding another sub panel?

During a recent re model, we upgraded our service to 200A and placed the new panel in the attached garage as we also re located the meter pan. The old 100A panel in the basement was converted to a sub panel. After additional renovations we moved tha majority of the circuits to the new 200A panel in the garage. The 100A sub panel now only supports a 30A dryer circuit and a few other 15A and 20A circuits for the basement.

I am looking to build a detached garage and it would be much easier to feed it from the basement sub panel due to location and distance. Is this allowed by code and how large a sub panel can it support? 60A would be more than enough for the detached garage.

Thanks,
Stu

Yes, you can feed a subpanel from another subpanel as long as everything is sized correctly. Is the old 100 amp panel actually fed from a 100 amp breaker in the new panel in the garage? Feeding a 60 amp subpanel from it will probably be OK, but that will have to be determined by someone inspecting the whole system in person.

Yes, you should be able to feed a new subpanel from your existing subpanel if everything checks out as stuart said. Make sure you run a 4 conductor/wire cable to your new detached garage subpanel!

Yes you can when you install the new panel in the garage make sure you put a ground rod in. New code and separate structure requires you to put in a separate ground rod even if you use a 4 wire conductor.

Forget the ground rod & use a UFER, concrete incased electrode.
