So shopping for a panel to put in the rear section of my garage to save money on wiring...Do I/Should I get one with a Main breaker or not...I realize its nothing but a shutoff... Looking at 20.00 difference for the "same" 20 space panel...one is a "convertible" Lug only, the other being a starter pack with 100A main...
Come to think of it, with the couple breakers they throw in with the starter pack, might just be cheaper and worth it having a shutoff....

But the question remains, do I HAVE to have a shutoff/main on that sub?

You can use a main lug panel. You already have a main disconnect in the garage so a second one is not required.
