Sub panel passed inspection but, I’m not sure it’s correct.

I found this today when I was about to connect new outlets. This has been this way 25 years and maybe I’ve been lucky. The inspector passed it way back then. There is a 100 amp panel in the detached garage 50ft from the house. It has 2 hots, 1 neutral from house. (I think #2) There is an earth ground rod connected to both panels. See in the photo how the neutral and ground is bonded? Is there any situation why this is ok? Note: There is a pool equipment but, it was connected several years after initial install. I’m thinking I should remove the neutral bonding screw and bar between ground and neutral bars. Any advice?image.jpg

25yrs ago, a subpanel in a detached structure was allowed to have a 3-wire feed and bonded neutral IF there were no parallel metallic pathways to the structure (metallic electrical conduit, gas and water lines, phone lines, etc). this changed with the 2008 code cycle...

so yeah youre good

see my write up on this on the electrical FAQs sticky

A three wire feeder to a detached structure was code compliant up through yhe 2005 NEC. It's fine, but there should probably be two griundcrids..

Thanks folks for replying to my dead horse question. All good. The buildings are not attached by any metal of any sorts.

i would also point out that it looks like at least one neutral is landed with a bunch of grounds (on the left) so if you were to remove the bonding screw, you would have to start moving at least that one neutral to the right side. sometimes fixing one "problem" creates others

So the feeder wires are in PVC pipe, no metal that could be used for a ground?

The upper left breaker seems to be double tapped. I don't think GE breakers are rated for two wires.

That is some strange coloration on the left neutral bar.

#1 thing is BOTH those bars are neutral bars, it is a split neutral, if the panel were supplied by a 4-wire feeder the proper thing would be to spend a few bucks for ground bar kit, not modify /hack up listed equipment.
