Sub panel question

Hi all! When I built my shop I tapped into the meter base to power my shop. I installed a disconnect panel at the meter base and ran 4 wires to the sub panel inside the shop. I had to install a new meter base that does not allow a tap so I am feeding my shop via the house main service panel. My wires from the shop will not reach the service panel so I decided to keep the disconnect panel at the meter and run new wires from the service panel to the disconnect. My thoughts were to run 4 wires to the disconnect panel as I would a sub panel, but the disconnect is not set up that way. It would have to be modified for 4 wires which I am reluctant to do at this time. I need some advice as to how to safely modify the disconnect or can I run 3 wires from the service panel and 4 wires from the disconnect to the garage sub panel. I hope I haven't been too confusing.

Run 4 wires from the main panel to the disconnect, ground the disconnect, continue ground to sub panel. Feed the two hots thru the disconnect switch legs, and run the neutral continuous through to the sub panel. (Do not break the neutral in the disconnect, or bond it to the ground, either at the disconnect or the sub panel). Sub panel will need a ground rod. Check with your local AHJ before doing so, may not be allowed. This is assuming your garage is detached.....
