My brother gave me a roll of 8/3 with ground. I want to wire a sub panel in my garage for a Millermatic 210(30 amp input), a 220v 20 gallon air compressor(15 amp input tops) and a dedicated 20 amp 120 volt recept. Bought a 6 circuit main lug panel. Anyway, was gonna put a 60 amp breaker in main box. Will the 8/3 with ground work for 60 amps if running only 35 feet to sub panel? Or am I being a tight *** and need #6 if dead set on 60 amps. What is max amperage for that 8/3 w/ ground romex?

#8 is good for 40A and #6 is good for 50A. Buy some #2 Aluminum SER cable, it's cheap and will give you up to 90A. Breaker it at 60A because breakers above 60A get expensive. I assume your garage is attached to your house, if not then things change.

SER is sized from the 60 degree C column of table 310.16 in the 2008 NEC & newer, so #2 AWG AL is 75A max.

If you have lots of wire and this is attatched garage run a circuit for the welder and one for a panel for the rest of the stuff.

You can't use Romex to a detached garage. Either bury the wire which has to be UF rated, or 4 individual wires in PVC conduit. Also, it needs its own ground rod in addition to a ground back to the main panel.

To add, there is a stipulation to the 60 degree C requirement and that is if the SE is installed in thermal insulation, if not then the 60 degree does not apply. 2011 NEC Art. 338.10 B 4a
