So this is my first time rebuilding an engine I usually get remans or just heads

So I am just cautious these blocks are a pain to get apart and wrist pins pain plus head bolt came stripped out on 1 but trying to do this and get some experience too

Any tips from Subaru techs or those that have experience with the ej series boxer engine

Sacrifice a timing belt for use as a cam sprocket holding tool. Those head bolts are tough, too.

Ding ding!

Also don't over oil the head bolts when putting it back together. Too much oil and the bolt hole hydrolocks and you'll crack the block.

Other than that, it's a generic engine rebuild. Pretty straight forward unless you want to take apart the D-AVCS cam pulleys or something weird like that.

I used the old timing belt on my 00 RS when I changed the camshaft seals while changing the timing belt. I was able to cut the belt to fit into a strap wrench. Just be careful as one of the two cam sprockets in the SOHC, and three of the four on the DOHC are plastic.

When rebuilding use a baffled sump, saves ends and crank damage, from oil starvation.

Yeah and the hex bolts are super tight from last t belt service I will need to replace

But also check out company 23 has a lot of Subaru specialty tools

I do like the old belt and chain vise grip combo work great without proper tools

Company 23 does make some nice specialty tools at a reasonable cost. I'll be looking into what I need from them for my build. I plan on keeping subaru's for the rest of my life, so the investment is of little cost.

Why are you rebuilding it? Did you hurt it?

No just old and wore out 200k on original engine and turbo head gasket started to leak and while taking it apart turbo and intercooler bad due too hear soak and bearing play

Older blocks have better casting than new ones now just FYI
