Submersible well pump controller

i'm replacing a 3/4 hp submersible well pump with a 1/2 hp pump. Both are 230 volt. My question is, will the 3/4 hp pump controller work with the 1/2 hp pump, or do I need to use a 1/2 hp controller? If it was the other way around, I probably wouldn't question it, but I'm not sure if the controller needs changing for the smaller pump.

I agree. Also, two different motors of the same hp rating can require different overloads. You must use the nameplate FLA to size your overloads.

There is also a remote relay and start caps in the box. I would make sure that they are also rated for a different sized pump. If you look here http://www.lockewell.com/pdf/goulds/centripro.pdf

you will see different controllers for different HP pumps so I would assume that they are different in that the capacitor for the different pumps would have a different rating.

I use to work in a pump shop and we stocked different controllers for each hp rating. There is a difference between the 1/2hp and 3/4hp controllers. In your particular situation there might not be a difference but u need to look @ the pump specs and controller specs to determine this. Otherwise u can burn up something prematurely!
