if I am pulling a feeder wires for 50A or (60A breaker with max load 55A) subpanel

2x black #6 AWG
1 green #10

what size can the neutral be?

If I add up to 4 x 20A 120V circuits, (2 on each leg of the subpanel) maximum is for the neutral 40A of 120V load can I use #8?

In the actual install I am just planning to put 2x 20A 120V for now, I may put another 15A on outside for hardwired motion sensor light.

The other circuit is going to be a 240V 15A for an A/C and 240V welder / plasma outlet.

I'm going to make a blanket statement here. It won't apply to every situation in all of history.


After the main breaker the neutral must be the same size as the other conductors.

The National Electric Code does have some provisions for using a reduced neutral wire size, but they are kind of complex. Those provisions may also depend on which version of the NEC is in force in your area. So, you could do some research in the code book, or get someone qualified to figure it out for you, but for the circuit size you're talking about I'd personally just use #6...#8 wire is about 10 cents per foot cheaper, but unless you're running a very long distance that won't add up to that much of a savings.

If youre doing a 50a circuit in pipe, why are you running #6 in the first place?

#8 THWN is rated for 50a....
