Subpanel off of a subpanel

I have a 200 amp panel in my house and all the spaces for breakers a taken. I have a 100 amp breaker with aluminum wire running to a 100 amp subpanel on the back of my house for my hot tub. My question is can I run another subpanel off of this subpanel for my garage that is about 60 feet away. I have open spaces in the 100 amp subpanel that services my hot tub.

Sure you can but you need to be mindful of the loads you may have in the garage as to not over load the 100A sub-panel.

Patten, would he need to worry about additional voltage drop for the first subpanel, too? Because effectively, if the hottub is 100ft from the main panel, and the garage 100ft from the hottub sub, he's looking at 200ft?

Thanks for the info!

The hot tub is about 50 feet from the main panel with AA-8030 aluminum wire going to the hot tub sub panel. If someone could give me an idea what wire to run to from the hot tub panel to the garage subpanel and the size of the subpanel that would work in the garage.

The total distance from my main panel to the new garage sub panel is around 110 ft give or take.

Yes distance and size of the feed also need to be considered because of voltage drop. I'd say in most cases if the total run is under 200 ft then VD may not be a big issue but that's not to say it can't be an issue.

I would still come off the main panel, even if the hot tub panel was closer. Unless it was impossible. They make twins/quads to free up spaces. But no way of knowing if it'll work for you without looking at your panel.

Are you in the US? Need to know what size AL wire is feeding the existing hot tub sub-panel? The AA-8030 is the aluminum alloy type. What's the AWG? Also, how many conductors are feeding the sup-panel, 3 or 4?
