I have used the 'bucket trap' also, with good success.
First set-up (over a few months) caught 11, 2nd time caught 3.
Must've been about 10 months before I just set it up for the 3rd time- so far (about 3 weeks) I haven't caught anything. I've been sealing up the perimeter, tho.
The anti-freeze absolutely works to kill all smell.
Love it when the low-buck solution kicks ***.

i tie a small piece of twine on the trigger and then i put the slightest drop of honey on the twine and let it dry b4 putting on peanut butter.

the mice might be able to lick off the peanut butter without setting it off, but that honey on a string it seems they like to chew and pull on that pretty good.

also some traps are way more sensitive than others, when my boy was younger we numbered the traps and kept track of the locations and number of kills... seemed there was always one or two traps that where 'killers' no matter where we put them.
