Sudden low voltage

Hey gang, this is probably a simple answer, but I want to verify before spending money. We had a storm here today and our ceiling fan/light fixture suddenly stopped working. Bulbs are good and the breaker did NOT trip. Testing the socket shows 1.5v. I even went so far as to test a few other fixtures to make sure there wasn't operator error here, sure enough, ~115v at the others. Is it possible that lightning somehow took our just that fixture without tripping the breaker or doing any other damage? Anything else to check before we go get a new fan?

there is a remote, but its also on a switch. THe lights are dimmable from the remote, but no dimmer switch is hardwired. Seems odd this would be the issue, as the fan also no longer works. Is there a dimmer in the fixture that would cause problems to both? If that's the case, is it worth fixing, or just spend the $150 for a new one?

There is most likely one module in the fan that handles the light dimmer and the fan speed control. It is usually tucked in on top of the fan and hidden. If I remember right these can be bought separately for around $40.

Kid,
Did you try to reset the breaker ? I have seen them "trip" but not go all the way to the tripped postion. Also, I have seen a few breakers actually fail to where they would not pass the voltage / current. I would check the power at the breaker first.

Just a suggestion,

Thanks for the replies. Yes I did reset the breaker. This fixture is the only thing on the circuit that is having problems.

Ill try and look for this module that you mentioned.

To make sure the fan or wireless receiver is bad, you should first check to see if theres power in the fan junction box. If no power and theres a wall switch, remove the switch and check for power there, either by testing between hot and neutral or hot and gound. Do this before replacing anything.

Switch power is good...I just need to pull the fixture down and check that. Takes me DAYS to do anything!

Sounds like u have a fried wireless controller then! I get service calls all the time because of fried wireless controllers on fans.

I had a wireless controller on a fan in my house that was causing light bulbs in the fixture to pop because it was outputing 155v on the 'light' wire! Most wireless fan controllers are cheap Chinese junk that can cause more problems than theyre worth, IMHO. I removed all the ones in my house!
