Guys,
Sorry I am easily distracted. Have been reviewing posts on garage interiors and insulation.
I can not say where this is going. I spend bunches of forum time on The Allis-Chalmers forum. In fact my building 'build' thread is on there. Lots of help from lots of folks.
So lets see how I might get things started here.
I will be 69 tomorrow. Most of the time I wonder why a old fart is building a garage at this stage of his life. Brain is still pretty good. but the miles on the body, well not so good.
The "shop" as it has been dubbed, has been a dream for 40 years.
I am retired and plan on spending some of the hard earned retirement funds on a toy box.
We dont have a lot of property. About 4 acres in Northwestern PA farm country.
My location for a building was limited due to lot shape. 600 ft frontage and about 250 deep.
I chose to place the shop in the island area inside our horseshoe shaped drive. Between the attached house garage and our sugarhouse. (making syrup is another hobby business).
I started a couple years ago cutting down some dying maples in that area of the yard. Yea clearing the land. Many days setting temp stakes in the yard and pacing off distances!
This spring seemed like the right time to start. Interest rates were low. A pandemic was on the horizion. What could go wrong??
Steel stakes went in the ground on March 13th.
Called the electric company and told them this big ash tree under their power lines was dead and needed to come down. withing days they were there and completed the task. I new this tree was going to be right in the way for the new underground power to come into the shop.

Regards,
Chris

So lets see about adding pictures here. May not be as easy as other forums? Humm? So I remember this method and its somewhat slow and cumbersome.
Here goes:
Ok This may not work with the pictures I have. I may try again. Very hard to load pictures on this type of forum. Wish you guys the best.
Regards,
Chris

Folks,
the manage attachment system?
We got poles in the ground easier than loading pictures here! Sorry about that! I have many, many pictures and they probably should be sorted better, Actually they are sorted very nice in Imgur but not in my download file where these came from.
That's my builder and his son working on sheeting the gable end trusses.
Double skirt board around the base of this old pole barn. 2x6 PT ripped to fit in above a layer of 2 inch high density foam in the bottom.
Regards,
Chris

Pic's seem to be working from my perspective. Looks like a great project and a pretty area!

Not sure on the ease of picture posting or any short cuts.

Welcome and I hope you will suffer through the pic upload, I am interested to see your shop progress.

for posting PDF's I just open it on the screen, then snapshot it and save the snapshot as a JPG. PDF's can carry viral content so are not allowed on most sites.

Sugarmaker, that looks like a really nice building! What size is it? What's your plans for the inside? It looks like you have a loft space as well? I'm very jealous of guys who can get a loft in their shop. I think the storage space is a huge advantage but sadly that wasn't an option for my build.

You mentioned being on an Allis Chalmers forum, which one? I need another forum to read like I need a hole in my head but I have a soft spot for old tractors. Do you have some old Allis machines?

As for pictures, I upload them directly to the GJ site. A lot of people will use tapatalk or imgur but I don't like messing around with multiple platforms (especially tapatalk) just to post pics. I do as you did by posting them as attachments. You can make them full size in your post by doing the following:
-Open each of your attached pictures in a new tab, copy the web address of the first picture.
-Click edit on your post with the picture attachments. Click the "Insert Image" button (looks like mountains with a yellow background) and then copy the web address of the picture into the pop-up box.
-Repeat this process for all your attached pictures, then click save.

It's cumbersome but it works. It also gives you the benefit of hosting them on the GJ website vs a external image hosting site which are prone to crashing. If you look back far enough there are probably hundreds of garage/shop build threads that the pictures have disappeared because the external picture hosting service has crashed or they have expired.

Jollygreengiant,
Thanks! The building is 40 x 64. With 4 zones (Areas). The loft is 14 wide x 28 long with 4 feet of stairs entering it. It is 7 feet tall in the loft. Have access to the attic from there and also a small door to bring things up or throw stuff down.
Zone 1 is going to be a work shop inside a work shop. That is 18 x 24 ish.
My truck zone is 20 x 28.
The high bay area is 36 x 40 with sissiors trusses. so 15 foot at the center of the room.

I use imgur and it would be a lot easier to load from there. I will try your method.

Used the mountain feature opened imgur and copied the url to the box for this site. Lets see how that worked?

Regards,
Chris

The Allis Forum is Unofficial Allis Forum. You can find me there same handle.
I have 6 Allis tractors in the shop right now. WD series and a D17 and a F40.
I will keep trying on the pictures!

Nice looking shop so far.

Post #17 only shows one photo. Was there another at the top of the post? I’m not an IT guy but something about removing the “s” in the image address?

Captian, Years ago I used this type of forum Was hard to load pictures using photobucket which I dont use much any more. Trying to go direct from Imgur storage system. I only have about 1400 pictures of the shop this summer.

I will take all the help I can get. Would like to be part of this and help others spend massive amounts of money on a shop too!:)

Chris

Thanks guys for the support. We are trying on this end!

Your shop sounds like it's going to be awesome. That much space should be really nice. And I love the old Allis tractors. Do you use them much or are they for show?

This thread might help on the picture posting: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=169618

So lets see about this? Again this seems to only work from chrome book pictures thru the manage attachment option. I can jump thru the hoops and make it large as JGG says.

Ok, bare with me as I try to add some building details:
Elvis our robo floor sweeper is on his nightly mission traversing our living areas!
These photos are somewhat in order but not all building related. JGG asked about the mower a used John Deere 272 groomer on the Jubilee makes a great lawn mower for our little 3 acres.

Here we actually have some of the base in place for the building: Allis WD wide front and trailer.

This is one of my tractors. 1954 Allis Chalmers WD45
attachment.php

A CAD sketch of the proposed building layout. (early but had to start somewhere)
attachment.php

I was able to scrounge materials for a jib crane build too. I mean why not. No pressure here it just has to be ready to go in befor the roof goes on!
attachment.php

Hey I found a small work around on the picture loading. Right click on the thumbnail, copy the link uses the mountain and paste the link then remove the thumbnail portion of the text, makes a bigger picture.
attachment.php

Dirt moving! We are somewhat commited at this point!
attachment.php

This small shallow hole in the yard took 27 tri axles of bank gravel to bring it up to proper grade.
Some materials being delivered: That is my sugarhouse in the background. Nice to get things out of there and into the shop so we can get to making maple syrup too. It is a 20 year old Board and batton hemlock sided post and beam (pole barn) structure.
attachment.php

I went back and removed the thumbnails from this post too. That was somewhat painful but we are getting a little traction now.

Chris

Folks,
One more and I am done for the night!
Me in the orange and my builder setting posts. Ok he is setting the post I am watching! :) A bunch of these went in the holes that had 3 bags of concrete mixed and hardened as a base. about 4 foot in the ground. I think there were 32?

Began to look like something was happening about mid year 2020. Our raised ranch and attached garage in the background, which 1/2 was my shop for the last 35 years.

The pics in your last two posts didn't come though for me?

Edit: I think I see what happened. Go back and edit your last two posts. When you open the edit box, where the web URL is for your pictures, remove the "s" from https.

JGG,
Thanks for the comments. i can see them fine. Must be when I deleted the thumbnails at the bottom the pictures went away too?
What would most folks rather see the thumbnails to click on or the large pictures??
I will do my best to correct the problem. Wait I am the problem!:)

I did get this nasty note when I hovered over the pictures I can see and you cant! Guess I got my hands slapped!

Ok guys,
I do apologize for the mess with the pictures in my posts above. I have been over in the Ford Barn Forum for several months (the 32 above) and a member suggest and posted a link back to this forum. about the shop. I tried to load a picture again and it worked much better. Someone here must have improved that function!
So The shop: Yes I now have one! You can see some of the details above in my earlier posts. Here to chat and provide encouragement for others to spend massive amounts of money too!:)

Yesterday, still many things to do on this building, mainly on the interior:

Folks,
I am not a regular on here. Had lots of problems loading pictures in prior posts. Just came here to try it again and look around. Most of my forum time is on the sister forum Ford Barn with my blog on the 32 dump truck and life around Albion PA. using postimage to hold pictures may try a few here to see if they show and are easier to load. I did have a lot of pictures of my shop build.
This looks like it might work? Here I was putting up some track for future sliding door project:

Sounds like we're singing from the same sheet of music. My shop is 40X64 also with a loft and shop within the shop. I'm gonna take some more time to look over your photos. Thanks for putting those up!

Guys,
Just happened to think about the Garage Journal Forum. The question about the swing lift. Well the junk steel was laying near by the neighbors. including the pipe. I drug it home and sketched out the jib crane concept. Of course you should build one of these during the heat of the summer. It was a project I did while I was helping build the shop. A very useful tool as it has pulled and helped install several engines in old cars and trucks.

Some additional shots of the jib crane construction and installation.
The pictures that I had taken and resized in size now load Ok. I do apologize to the many posts of not much content.
By the way we are really enjoying this home away from home! I have lots of pictures of the details of the shop build, and am more than willing to help others spend massive amounts of money too!:)

JGG,
I will see if I can fill in some of the blanks on this shop build.
This was the start of the project 4 years ago. Had to clear the land!:)
DiducSy.jpg

My lovely wife on the ash logs from out near the road, little did I know these would make all the window trim in the shop.
Had them sawn into 1 inch lumber at local Amish mill. Then aged outside under a cover for a year.
F4CAUGs.jpg

Site prep completed by my next door neighbor and his employee.
NIiVOjR.jpg

26 tri axles of bank gravel from Lake Erie and the hole started to fill in!
E7ptWck.jpg

I thought the ground was fairly level, turns out we needed almost 3 foot of bank gravel on the south west corner.
The slope into the garage doors seemed like a show stopper, turns out I just had to get used to it and live with it!
UgqgU59.jpg

Yes this site location was somewhat in our front yard. building start point had to be 65 feet from centerline of the road.
Building dimensions 64 x 40, with the 64 running back from the road. This area was the island in our horseshoe driveway.
More pictures coming:

Shop build pictures cont:
I used Google Sketchup for the design work. Adding the actual elevations and the house really helped see this shop prior to the build. I worked on that portion a lot. But what I did not do was detail the inside of the building as to storage/ work areas.

House to the left, sugarhouse in the back (FYI have added another building last year 2023 for most of the tractors in the collection)
