I have a new millermatic 350p wire welder, it has the 50amp 3 prong plug I will be using it on single phase. I went to lowes and got the 50amp receptical that fits the plug and asked the guy in electrical which wire he sold me 20ft of 6-2 (I think) it has 1 black 1 white and a bare wire. Is this what i need or should I have got 6-3 wire? I have now been told I have the wrong wire and should have gotten 6-3 instead. And if I should have got the 6-3 which has 4 wires where does the 4th wire go when i only have a 3 pronged plug??

You did good. The 6 wire is fine but the plug and recept are, marginal depending on duty cycle. I cant remember every model but I think it calls for a 70 or better breaker. That's quite a machine for this crowd.

According to the MillerWelds site, the machine requires 61A @ 230V 1Ø, or 30A @ 230V 3Ø & 70A time delay fuses or 90A non time delay & also calling for a minimum 8 AWG grounding conductor, which rules out NM cable (Romex®) to supply it, because it only has a 10 AWG grounding conductor. Fuse sizes were only given for the single phase input since OP spec'd 1Ø.

He could use NM, but he'd have to bump it up to 4-3 to get a #8 ground. It looks like a Leviton 5374 is made to handle up to #4 too. It would also take a pretty good sized box to handle NM cable that big.
Otherwise, it might be easier to pipe it.

Wiring/fusing/etc. requirements are right in the manual, it will tell you everything you need 
I'd cheat and use 8-2 despite the undersized ground, or cheat and use 8-3 and color the neutral wire green. (Not permitted)

Yup, I missed the ground size. Putting a breaker in larger than a 60 would need it.

The 200 compact wire feeds are like that, they allow 14/35 but list a 12 ground wire. They come with a 12 cord.
