Suggestion for "Free Parking

Just a W.A.G. here, but the administrators of this site don't know enough about vBulletin to be able to configure certain areas of the site as "private" or at the very least, set up permissions to view certain areas (or threads).

Learning these valuable vBulletin tools can keep certain people from even viewing these threads, therefore, less moderation, since the area is out of view from the general public.

And don't hide behind the idea of "bandwidth" it just means your server *****.

It only costs $300 a year to operate a site like this, so make some upgrades.

Just axing threads like you are is going to cause a mass exodus from this site, which has already happened, but I guess you're ok with that.

My guess is that Ryan doesn't want to deal with private sections of the site. He wants people to follow the rules and for the content not to be bizarre.

I did happen to read the thread that ryan has since closed that seems to be causing all the trouble and I see why he shut it down. It got WEIRD. Everyone likes to see stuff like that until it gets to weird which is a different level for everyone. From reading that one thread I can see why Ryan is talking about shutting down free parking. If people want to see someone elses wife in that way then visit 4chan or some other "type" of site. This site is labeled as Garage Journal and not "Wife Swap" for a reason. Sorry to rant but I do find some of the threads in Free Parking informative and helpful and would rather not see it closed all together

Would you want your business operation to sponsor content as crude as some of the content on here can become? Nope. This bird has to fly. If all it took is $300 to post up a site such as this I am fairly certain there would be more sites than viewers.

I do occasional repair work in an office than has a fairly large interactive web site. The equipment room in this place is large and quite complex.

Perhaps some day Ryan would show the workings of the beast to us. I'm sure $300 would not buy the power strips required to plug all of the stuff in.

It costs me about $17.00 for site hosting every month. If I choose to make upgrades to the software, I can do so at a nominal cost, but the most my site has cost me in a year is $8oo, and that's when I left vBulletin and went to XenForo's forum software. My average annual cost is $300.

Ive got a thread on that site that has well over 900,000 posts, and bandwidth has never been an issue with my new site hositng server.

I have no advertisers to answer to, but there are certain threads I don't want the general public to see if they happen to stumble upon my site. It's pretty easy to set up permissions on either vB or XF to where only a set group of users are permitted in that particular forum.

I am on another forum that uses this software that has a password restricted area. Works perfectly.

One other thing about vBulletin.

There is a 'hack' available for this software that allows for a "chatroom".

Might not be a bad idea..........just sayin'

The only real reason I look at this site in the first place is because it is not really that raunchy or rough. There is some goofy stuff on here that is actually sort of funny. I work my numbs off all day and go on the web to unwind so I don't have a stroke in my sleep from dealing with all of these same types face to face, I'm physically tired but still mentally fresh. ( Sort of) And at my age I have all of the tools and garage junk I will ever need.
It is what it is.

Once upon a time, a group of guys here set-up an unofficial GJ chatroom somewhere. So, there is dme demand for it, or at least there used to be. I don't think I'd be uing it, but some would.

The thing is, this site is quite diverse in terms of members. Most of the members are good folks, use good mannors, keep it G rated (at worst PG), and know how to have fun within reason. We have some great ladies and teens on this site, that we need to keep. I love GJ and spend about an hour per night reading.

Then we've got that....umm...element of folks in our hobby. Naked chick calendar on the wall, curses in public places, will screw anything that moves, and actually enjoyed the scary things that showed up in "that thread". I read one poster today who mentioned "motorboating those t*ts" today. I mean, come on!

If the moderators can crack down on that trash element, we will be fine. It's really only a few folks.

To the OP, if you want to have that sort of stuff on your HVAC site, more power to you, but it's just not needed here, nor allowed.

What does making a thread password protected do for this site? Nothing that I can see.....

I like the variety of subjects allowed in FP, and have learned a bit here and there from it, but I can't think of anything useful that I can learn from naked or semi naked pics of women, that I can use in my garage..

I also don't see the point of threads discussing what or how much someone drank in their garage/shop. I mean, really? Why would someone want to know that?

Point being, if people want to discuss drinking, politics, religion or look at naked women there are plenty of places in the WWW to do that, just not here.

To the OP, I think it takes a lot of gall to come into another person's site and tell them how they don't know what they are doing just because parts of it don't please you. Especially since those rules and guidelines are clearly stated.

Don't like the way things are done here, how about a private word with the site's owners rather than stirring up shiite in the general populace?

My point is simply this: A forum is a community, and through interaction with each other, certain members become friends and want to have a place to BS about relevant topics, and apparently, Ryan thinks that some sort of chatroom might solve some of the recent problems.

@Ryan.......I'm curious as to why you don't have the word filter enabled. The words I have on my "naughty list" are $h!t, fcuk, and Obama.
