This has likely been brought up, discussed, and declined for whatever reason, but I for one would very much like to see the vintage area broken up into "Vintage Machinery" and "Vintage Hand Tools & Accessories."

Thoughts?

I can't recall if this split has been brought up before but it seems that once a month, another su-section is brought up. Whether it's adding a section for lifts, different styles garages, it probably won't see the light of day until GJ is changed over to Xenfro like The HAMB.

Whatever comes of it, the decision will be made by Ryan. I very rarely visit this section. So it may be a very good idea. However, I'd rather not see a ton of sub-sections on the forum.

Totally agree. A ton of sub-sections wouldn't serve well. But spitting vintage machinery and vintage tools would be welcome to many of us. There are a few of us that cross genres, but to generalize, most are either machinery folks or hand tool folks.

In the above thread I posted my thoughts. Since that time this is the second or third request for additional subforums. If all requests were granted then we would have that many more sub forums. If all requests for subforums would have been granted since I became a member of this group would have been granted the forum would now be worthless. Just my $.02 worth. BTW I have also requested changes to the forum, one that was for compressed air. Now the compressed air questions are scattered throughout the subforums.

Can we get a more friendly picture posting format? Maybe from a phone for those of us who don't have cameras.
Use to GJ app. It is extremely easy from the app. Pics won't upload to PMs for me but work just fine in the forum.

Twertsy it sounds like a great idea ,of course I voted yes but...(always a but) it seems like a small percentage of members will always post in the wrong section, until ryan made the general section into vintage I still have a ton of vintage posts in the general tool section.

Not sure why all the confusion exists :dunno: but every now and then members will post their vintage tools in the general tool section at least every week, so making more sections sounds like a great idea but I don't think some of are members will ever get it.:(

Funny thing but when I try and get them moved most times it never works, not sure why but I feel sometimes even the mods get confused.:dunno:

Well, if we're going to turn twertsy's very focused thread into a general impromptu Suggestions Box, that - moving ALL old threads on vintage subjects stranded up on the General Discussion board to the Vintage board - would also be my #1. My #2 is a 'Read Me Before Posting' stickie. :)

I'm on another forum that has way too many sub-forums. Some of them go months without a new posting. With many subcategories, I often miss posts of interest because I don't have time to scan all of them. And it keeps the moderators busy moving posts around because people can't figure out which is the correct subcategory.

Guys.....I'm not suggesting a forum category for every tool, simply vintage machines and vintage hand tools. To emulate my best Spock, it's only logical......

The extra sub-forum to separate them probably isn't a bad idea. I would just prefer it be done with the switch to Xenfro. Personally, I would like to see an automotive sub-forum and the Heating and A/C change to Plumbing/HVAC.

When it comes to moving threads, I think I do it once a day. Sometimes it's stuff I see and other times, it's a request. It's not a big deal to move something so if you guys and girls need help, don't be afraid to shoot me a PM. I'd be glad to help.

I visit GJ about once a day on average, maybe more. When the vintage category was set up I didn't like it. Now I'm trained to go here after I check normal. I check the fabrication section and free parking too and each one I'll go back 5 pages deep which covers me up to where I left off. The fabrication section is usually only got 2 - 3 new pages on it from my last visit and vintage is not much busier. Free Parking and normal are the busiest so I'd think they would need sub-sections before vintage.

From my level of usership I'm happy the way it is.

Another vote for the category split. As for the general tool section, its like going to the Library of Congress without the Dewey Decimal System.

It is not for the Mods to decide as we do not have the Admin ability to run the forum.

I have to agree with Eric on this as once the format is changed we may see some changes for the better and perhaps some many may not like.

This. I can't see any good reason for it.

I think some of the problems of getting tools in the correct category, vintage or not, is the definition of 'vintage'. I am sure that your definition and mine are different. I sure don't believe that any tool that I have bought new is 'vintage' yet I see them show up on the collectors posts all the time. To some vintage and collectible is to others 'just what have because I can't afford any better'.

Then you have to find the dividing line between machines and hand tools. Is a breast drill a hand tool or machine, how about a post drill that can be either hand or motive powered. It's some what easier if your looking a car mechanics tools box, but lets be fair there are a lot of other trades and interests represented here.

Your expecting black and white where 256 shades of grey exist. Picking the point on that grey scale where you change from black to white is difficult and then add in everyone's OPINION and it what we have.

I am also against it after seeing what happens when to many sub forums exists. I also frequent another forum for tractors and the main site I go to for information has so many divided forums it is almost impossible to navigate it. The way it is divided up it is impossible to logically understand all the forums and is impossible for a new person to the forum to understand where they should post to. I am one for the simplest and easiest forum to navigate in.
